A Northern Gas Networks’ major project to upgrade 1.2km of ageing metal gas mains in York city centre is progressing well, with the fourth phase of the work in St Savioursgate on schedule for completion at the end of next week (30 August).

From Monday, 2nd September, our highly skilled team of engineers will be moving onto the fifth phase of the project, continuing the essential replacement work in High Ousegate, Pavement, Parliament Street and Coppergate.

Due to the width (63cm) of the gas pipe which is being laid, in order to carry out this phase of the work safely and efficiently it will be necessary to close High Ousegate, Coppergate and Pavement to traffic for the following durations:

High Ousegate will be closed to traffic from 2nd September to 29th November
Pavement will be closed to traffic from 16th September to 13th October
Coppergate will be closed to traffic from 16th September to 13th October
Our team of engineers will work closely with businesses in the area to ensure access is granted for deliveries. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted whilst the closures are in place.

Temporary bus stops will be installed however members of the public travelling by bus may experience minor delays whilst the road closures are in place. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, and high density boarding will be used around our sites to help reduce noise levels.

The major project is part of Northern Gas Network’s ongoing investment in the north of England’s gas mains infrastructure and will involve replacing York’s ageing metallic gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to our customers in York for years to come.
The nine month project will be carried out in seven phases to minimise city centre disruption, and is scheduled for completion in March 2014. Garry Farnhill, Customer Operations Area Manager, Northern Gas Networks said; “We’re very happy with the way the project is progressing so far and would like to thank everyone for their patient and understanding.

“We will continue to keep our customers informed throughout by holding community forums at key stages of the work. Our next forum will be held on Tuesday 27th August between 17.30 and 19.00 at The Black Swan Inn, providing an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions or raise any concerns.”

More information about our work can be found on our website and we will be sharing regular updates on Twitter and Facebook.

In the coming weeks Northern Gas Networks will be opening a customer cabin, located in the Parliament Street / Pavement area of the city. Members of the public are invited to drop in to get the latest information about the work and representatives from Northern Gas Networks will be available to answer any questions that they may have. The cabin will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11.00am to 1.00pm and on Tuesday evenings from 5.00pm to 7.00pm.

As part of this major project engineers will also be working in the following York city centre locations over the coming months:

Winter 2013 /14: Goodramgate, Monkgate Bar
Spring 2014: St Maurice’s Road
The Northern Gas Networks community forum will be held at The Black Swan Inn, 23 Peasholme Green, York, Y01 7PR from 17.30 – 19.00 on Tuesday 27th August.

If you have any questions about the works please don’t hesitate to contact the Customer Care team on 0845 634 0508, option 7. The team is available between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday, and 9am and 5pm on Saturday.
