Northern Gas Networks is upgrading ageing metallic gas mains in Cockermouth, Cumbria.

The project is part of Northern Gas Network’s ongoing development of infrastructure across the north of England and will involve replacing 2km of existing metallic gas main with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to our customers in the area for years to come.

The essential work, which is expected to take a total of 25 weeks to complete, will be carried out in phases, commencing in Vicarage Lane on Monday 18 August. This phase of the work is expected to take four weeks to complete.

Work will then move into:

Lorton Road – approximately 13 weeks

Victoria Road – approximately 7 weeks

Skinner Street – approximately 1 week

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to close Vicarage Lane for four weeks while work is taking place. Road access will be maintained for residents and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Barry Watson, Customer Operations Area Manager, Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Cumbria Highways department to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to complete this work as quickly as possible, including working 7 day weeks where possible.

“Our Customer Liaison team is door-knocking residents in the area to help ensure they are aware of the work.  If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact our Customer Care team on 0845 634 0508, option 7.

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause and thank members of the public for their patience and support.

Northern Gas Networks Customer Care line is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
