Northern Gas Networks is investing £170k to upgrade 300m of ageing metallic gas mains in Wakefield city centre.

The project is part of Northern Gas Networks’ ongoing development of infrastructure across the north of England and will involve replacing existing metallic gas main with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to our customers in the area for years to come.

The 11 week project will commence on Monday 2 February 2015 and will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption.

Planned schedule of works:

Phase 1: Lower Warrengate to Vicarage Street (02/02/2015 – 02/03/2015)

Phase 2: Vicarage Street to the junction of Sun Lane (02/03/2015 – 30/03/2015)

Phase 3: From the junction of Sun Lane to 2 Sun Lane (30/03/2015 – 17/04/2015)

In order to complete the work safely and efficiently, three way temporary traffic lights will be in place on Lower Warrengate throughout phase 1 (from 2 February). It will also be necessary to suspend parking along this road for the duration of the project.

Businesses in the area will remain open as usual and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

John Pickering, Customer Operations Area Manager, Northern Gas Networks said: “We are holding a community drop in session at The Salvation Army Church on Vicarage Street South between 5 – 7pm on Tuesday 20 January, where we will be on hand to answer any questions or concerns from members of the public.

“We will also continue to keep customers informed via our website, Twitter and Facebook accounts and the local media.”

Mr Pickering added “We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause.”

If you have any questions about the work please don’t hesitate to contact the Customer Care team on 0845 634 0508, option 7. The team is available between 8am and 10pm Monday to Friday, and 9am and 5pm on Saturday.
