The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £50,000 to upgrade the ageing metal gas mains in Leeds.

The major project is part of NGNs’ ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing 430m of existing metal gas mains in Main Street and Garth End with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to our customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which will commence on Monday 27 July, has been carefully planned in conjunction with Leeds City Council. In order to complete the works as quickly as possible, engineers will be working 7 days a week from 8am – 6pm.

Russ Oxley, Construction Services Area Manager Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Leeds City Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise any disruption caused.

“In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently it is necessary to install temporary traffic lights to help manage the traffic flow – two-way traffic lights will be situated outside of the church on Main Street and a three-way traffic lights will be located at the junction of Main Street and Smithy Court.  The lights will be in operation from 3 August until 13 August and will be manually controlled by a member of the team.

“The pedestrian crossing on Main Street at the junction of Smithy Courth will be suspended while the three way traffic lights are in operation and an alternative temporary pedestrian crossing will be in place during this time. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

The Smithy Court bus stop will also be temporarily suspended while the three-way traffic lights are in operation and a temporary bus stop will be in place for members of the public travelling by bus during this time.

Russ continued: “We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause and thank members of the public for their patience and support.”
