The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing over £300,000 to upgrade ageing metal gas mains in the Greystone Road, Carlisle area.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing over 2km of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.

The fourteen week project, which has been carefully planned in conjunction with the local highways authority, commenced on Monday 14 March.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently there are three way traffic signals in place at the junction of Warwick Road and Gresytone Road for the duration of the works. These lights are being manually operated between the hours of 7am – 7pm to control traffic flow, and set to an automatic sequence outside of these hours.

Some parking is suspended along Greystone Road and Brunton Crescent and the footpath on Vasey Crescent is closed.

Matty McBride, Construction Services Area Manager at Northern Gas Networks said: “We have planned this work closely with Cumbria County Council to coincide with the flood recovery works in the area.

“We understand the recent floods have caused a huge distress to the community and through working closely with the local highways authority we have agreed to carry out our replacement works at the same time as the flood recovery works in order to minimise further disruption to residents.

Mr McBride continued: “To help keep customers informed about the works we held a community forum at Greystone Road Community Centre on Close Street on Wednesday 2 March where customers were invited to drop in to find out more and ask questions.

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause and thank members of the public for their patience and support.”

NGN is working with the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), a non-profit making independent organisation founded by the construction industry to improve its image.  NGN is registering major projects and larger gas mains replacement sites where the duration of work is scheduled to last more than six weeks.

The mains replacement project at Greystone Road, Carlisle has been registered for CCS; the site will have a detailed inspection in due course by a CCS Monitor who will assess and feedback on factors such as the appearance of the site and the environment.
