Engineers from Northern Gas Networks (NGN) have been carrying out work to repair a gas main on Leam Lane (A194), Lindsifarne Roundabout, Jarrow.

Engineers arrived on site on Monday 19 July to carry out the initial repairs with the first part of the work completed on Tuesday 26 July. Engineers will return tomorrow evening (Tuesday 9 August) to complete the work.

In order to carry out the final part of the repair work safely and efficiently it will be necessary to close one outbound lane on the A194 (Leam Lane) while the work is carried out.

NGN has been working closely with South Tyneside Council to plan the work. In order to minimise the disruption caused to members of the public it has been agreed that the work will start at 8pm on Tuesday and engineers will work through the night.  Noise levels will be kept to a minimum throughout the night.

Both lanes will reopen from 6.30am on Wednesday 10 July and work will continue during daytime hours to return the road to normal.  This stage of the work will be carried out under the existing traffic restrictions which are already in place in the area, in order to minimise disruption caused to members of the public.

NGN is currently discussing plans to replace the ageing metal pipe to coincide with South Tyneside Council’s essential highways improvement works and will be keeping members of the public updated about future plans.

NGN Site Manager Mick Smith said: “We know that no one likes roadworks and would like to thank members of the public for bearing with us while we carry out this essential work which will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.”
