The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is carrying out essential works to upgrade the gas distribution network in and around Great North Road, Gosforth.

The project represents around £90k and is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area. It involves replacing more than 300 metres of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones. This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The works have been carefully planned in conjunction with Newcastle City Council, having been planned to take place during the school summer holidays when traffic is lighter than usual. The project is expected to take about five weeks to complete.

In order to protect NGN engineers and members of the public, it has been necessary to introduce some temporary traffic management measures in and around Great North Road, southbound between Broadway roundabout and ASDA Gosforth. This involves a lane closure so that engineers can reach the gas main.

It’s expected the lane closure will be removed before schools start back in September. In the meantime, motorists and commuters are advised to leave extra time for travel because of the traffic management in place, which is significantly affecting journey times.

Alan Robley, Site Manager for NGN, said: “We have been working closely with Newcastle City Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience that people may encounter and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”

NGN Customer Care officers have been door-knocking local residents and businesses to make customers aware of the project’s latest phase, while on-site signage will advise road users of the work taking place. Regular updates will also be available on our website, northerngasnetworks.co.uk, on Twitter @NGNgas and on Facebook @northerngasnetworks.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual while the works are underway.
