New mural celebrates Redheugh’s iconic gas holders

Read

A vibrant new mural has been unveiled in Redheugh, Gateshead, to commemorate the area’s historic gas holders.

The area’s third and final gas holder, at Team Street, is currently being demolished, and will disappear from the skyline by the end of 2019.

Northern Gas Networks, the area’s gas distributor, is carrying out the demolition work. The company teamed up with art students at Gateshead College, to create the mural, which now adorns the brick walls surrounding the Team Street site.

Alex Brightman, a community care officer from Northern Gas Networks, worked closely with the students to explore the history of the gas holders, which have stood for more than 100 years.

This research uncovered some fascinating social history, which inspired the students’ designs. The artwork includes images of women workers who stepped up while the men were away during World War 1, and the local community area.

Alex Brightman said: “The gas holders used to be a vital part of the area’s gas supply system, storing gas to be used during high demand in the winter months.

“Today’s modern gas network means holders are no longer in use. They are costly to maintain, which is why they are disappearing from the skyline, both in our region, and around the UK.

“It was great working with the college on this project to commemorate these iconic structures, which have been a familiar sight in Redheugh for more than a century.”

The students are working towards their Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design.

Kevin Marston, assistant principal of Gateshead College, said: “This has been a fantastic project for our students to get involved in. Not only have they been able to learn more about the North East’s rich heritage, they’ve also been able to use their creative skills on an industry commission, which will be seen by thousands of people on a daily basis.”

“At Gateshead College we work with a range of organisations to create opportunities for students to showcase their talents on community projects. This looks great on their CV and gives them a better chance of impressing potential employers when looking for a job.”

Northern Gas Networks is committed to taking down its gas holders in an environmentally-responsible way, by recycling as many materials as possible.

The company is also encouraging people to share their memories of the Redheugh gas holders through by emailing gasholdermemories@northerngas.co.uk or by writing to: Northern Gas Networks, 1st Floor, 1 Emperor Way, Doxford International Business Park, Sunderland, SR3 3XR.

£34k investment to gas distribution network at Leeds Road, Mirfield

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £34k to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network on the A62 Leeds Road in Mirfield.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of gas infrastructure in Kirklees and is due to start on 26th October, lasting around nine days. The scheme will see 600 metres of old metallic main replaced with durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe supply of gas to customers for years to come.

In order for engineers to complete this essential work safely and efficiently, there will be some traffic management measures in place.

From Saturday 27th October until 4th of November, the nearside east-bound lane of Leeds Road will be suspended, and from 26th of October until 4th of November, the west-bound bus lane will be suspended.

Three-way traffic lights will be in place, manually operated between 7am and 7pm to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

The works have been planned with Kirklees Council to coincide with the October school holiday, in order to minimise impact on road users.

NGN’s Customer Care team will be on site throughout the project, to keep customers updated as work progresses.

Chris Nevison, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting them completed as quickly as possible”.

Essential upgrade to gas distribution network on Truro Drive, Hartlepool

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £63,957 to upgrade the gas distribution network in and around Stockton Road and Truro Drive, Hartlepool.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing approximately 300m of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones.  This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

In order for the works to be carried out safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to implement some temporary traffic management measures in and around Truro Drive, Hartlepool, the works have been carefully planned in conjunction with Hartlepool Borough Council.

From Wednesday 24th October until Friday 23rd November, a lane closure will be put in place heading West bound on Truro Drive from Stockton Road for four weeks. During this time motorists will not be able to turn onto Truro Drive from Stockton Road. Residents leaving Chichester Close will have no left turn leaving the estate onto Truro Drive for at least two weeks. Residents leaving Honiton Way will not be able to turn right onto Truro Drive for the duration of the closure. We are hoping to reinstate the works as quickly as possible, opening some of the closure after two weeks. A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists.

It’s expected these works will cause some delays to journey times, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel whilst the temporary traffic signals and road closures are in place.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door-knocking local residents and businesses to make customers aware of the project’s latest phase, while on-site signage will advise motorists of the work taking place. Regular updates will also be available on NGN’s website northerngasnetworks.co.uk, Twitter @NGNgas and Facebook @northerngasnetworks.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual throughout the project.

Chris Taylor, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Hartlepool Borough Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience customers may encounter and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”

Essential upgrade to gas distribution network on Kirkleatham Lane, Redcar – Works Extended

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £33,000 to upgrade the gas distribution network in and around the Kirkleatham Lane, Redcar area.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing approximately 300m of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones.  This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The ageing metal gas main has required several repairs in recent years.  NGN has prioritised the pipe for replacement to minimise any inconvenience caused by future repairs.

Unfortunately NGN have had to extend the works by three- weeks due to engineering difficulties of excessive pipe depth and mains configuration, however this has been carefully planned in conjunction with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to minimise the impact caused.

Works started on Monday 17 September and will now be completing on Sunday 11th November.  It will be necessary to implement temporary traffic management measures to ensure the safe and continued flow of traffic whilst works are in progress.

From Saturday 27th October there will be temporary four-way traffic signals at the junction of Trunk Road/ Corporation Road and Kirkleatham Lane.  In addition, the two lanes on Kirkleatham Lane will be reduced to one lane traffic throughout the duration of the scheme.

It’s expected these works will cause some delays to journey times, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel whilst the temporary traffic signals are in place.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door-knocking local residents and businesses to make customers aware of the work, while on-site signage will advise motorists of the work taking place. Regular updates will also be available on NGN’s website northerngasnetworks.co.uk, Twitter @NGNgas and Facebook @northerngasnetworks.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual throughout the project.

Nigel Pearson, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience customers may encounter and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”

Award win for solar powered land improvement

Read

Northern Gas Networks has won a Brownfield Briefing Award for its land remediation work at a gas holder site in Redheugh, Gateshead.

NGN picked up the Best In Situ Treatment Award for the project, delivered in partnership with Sweco UK Limited and Geo2 Remediation Limited for its novel approach to cleaning up historical land contamination..

As part of the wider site demolition project, NGN used solar powered pumps to remove more than 4,500 litres of toxic coal tar from an underground tank which had been built during Victorian times. Through the use of only solar power, the gas distributor saved the equivalent of more than 18 tonnes of CO2 and approximately £6,000 in running costs in the initial six months of operation.

This follows on from the project winning the Sustainability Award at the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management Tyne and Humber Branch Annual Awards in July.

Neil Whalley, Environmental Strategy Manager at for Northern Gas Networks, said: “As part of our Environment Strategy launched in June 2018, we are exploring a variety of different methods to be sustainable.

“Through this use of only solar power, we saved the same amount of CO2 as the average car driving non-stop for 29 days as well as a reduction in noise, compared to traditional petrol generators, and vehicle movements associated with waste disposals.

“At NGN we’re committed to reducing our environmental impact on the customers and communities that we serve, and where possible make a positive impact.”

NGN is now exploring the use of solar power on future projects.

For around 100 years gas holders were a vital part of the local gas supply system, responsible for supplying gas to thousands of people across the country. However, advances in technology and the enhanced capability of the modern-day gas network mean that gas holders are no longer in use.

NGN is aiming to dismantle 23 of the region’s gas holders by 2021 as part of continued investment in modernising the gas network. A short film has also been produced to commemorate NGN’s gas holders.

Northern Gas Networks and Gentoo Group partner to bring affordable warmth to residents in Washington

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is working in partnership with housing provider Gentoo Group, to deliver a project that will bring affordable warmth to Gentoo Group residents in and around the Albany, Oxclose and Fatfield areas of Washington.

The network extension scheme and heating systems upgrade, which began on Monday 8th October, will involve NGN connecting around 1,000 owner occupiers and tenants to the gas network free of charge. Gentoo will then install modern gas central heating systems in residents’ homes, which will replace the existing district heating system.

The heating upgrade, which will help residents save energy and money and improve their homes, is taking place following extensive research and feedback from residents about the current internal heating system and has been carefully planned in conjunction with Sunderland City Council.

NGN is responsible for distributing gas to homes and businesses across Yorkshire, the North East and northern Cumbria.  Its network spans 25,000 sq km and contains some of the most economically deprived communities in the UK, from remote parts of rural Northumberland to deprived areas of Bradford.

NGN will be establishing a customer cabin Arklecrag (the cabin will be situated facing number one Arklecrag in the car park, in Albany), where more details about the works will be displayed and the team will be available to answer customers’ questions.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door-knocking residents to talk to them about the work and regular updates will also be available on NGN’s website northerngasnetworks.co.uk, Twitter @NGNgas and Facebook @northerngasnetworks.

Fergal O’Donovan, Business Operations Lead in Wear for Northern Gas Networks said: “At Northern Gas Networks we are dedicated to helping people to access affordable warmth.   We’re delighted to work with Gentoo Group to connect residents to the gas network free of charge and help them to create more comfortable homes and save money on their energy bills by giving them access to new heating systems.

“We have been working closely with Sunderland City Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.”

Conan McKinley, Director of Asset Strategy at Gentoo Group said: “We’re delighted to work in partnership with Northern Gas Networks on this investment programme. Not only will this work give people the power to choose who supplies their energy, but it will also create more efficient properties following the installation of the combi boilers.”

Sunderland City Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, Councillor Amy Wilson said:  “Listening to people’s concerns about how to best reduce their heating bills while still keeping their homes warm, is a direct way we can all help understand and tackle ‘fuel poverty’ which still affects many households.

“Working with our partners at Gentoo and Northern Gas Networks we’ve hopefully come up with a solution to the problem for people living in these neighbourhoods in Washington, but there’s still some work to be done.

“Increasing energy efficiency means decreasing energy bills and installing new heating systems to replace old inefficient systems is one practical way of achieving this.”

The project at Washington will be registered as a Considerate Constructors Scheme site – the key principles are to ensure minimal impact to the environment, customers and the community while observing the highest standards of safety.

For further information about the project please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email customercare@northerngas.co.uk.

Essential upgrade to gas distribution network on West End Avenue, Harrogate

Read

Since April 2018, the North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), have been carrying out essential works to upgrade the gas distribution network in and around West End Avenue, Harrogate.

The £500k project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing more than 6km of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones.  This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The works have been carefully planned in conjunction with North Yorkshire County Council.

In order for the remainder of works to be carried out safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to implement some temporary traffic management measures in and around the Leeds Road area.  The remaining works have been planned to coincide with the school holidays when we expect traffic in the area to be lighter than normal.

From Saturday 27th October until Sunday 4th November, there will be road closures in place on South Drive, St George’s Road, Park Drive and Langcliffe Avenue, meaning motorists will not be able to access Leeds Road roundabout via these streets.  A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists.

Access to these streets from the roundabout will be closed.  However, residents will be able to access these streets from the opposite end of the road closures.

Whilst the road closures are in place from Saturday 27th October to Sunday 4th November, motorists will be able to use Leeds Road, but there will be temporary two traffic signals in place during this time.  The traffic lights will be manually operated between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00 to ensure the safe and continued flow of traffic at peak times.

It’s expected these works will cause delays to journey times, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel whilst the temporary traffic signals and road closures are in place.

Steve Goodwin, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with North Yorkshire County Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience customers may encounter and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”
