NGN welcomes NIC decarbonisation study findings

Read

Northern Gas Networks has welcomed the findings of a decarbonisation study published this week by the National Infrastructure Commission.

Repurposing the gas grid to safely carry low-carbon hydrogen at scale is the lowest cost solution for decarbonising heat, according to the research.

The study estimates that converting the gas distribution network to 100% hydrogen would cost around £100bn less than electrifying the heating system with heat pumps.

Building on the work of its pioneering 2016 H21 Leeds City Gate feasibility study, Northern Gas Networks is currently leading a £10.3 million collaborative innovation project in partnership with the UK gas distribution networks to deliver critical safety evidence around a 100% hydrogen gas network.

This is being timed to coincide with the Government’s own £25 million hydrogen programme investigating hydrogen for use in homes.

The Commission’s study also concludes that a joined-up approach to the decarbonisation of our energy infrastructure could save £55bn by 2050, as much as £2,000 for each household in Great Britain.

The NIC commissioned Element Energy & E4 Tech to carry out the study, and investigate the cost of decarbonising the UK’s heat infrastructure, including space-heating and hot water.

The final report, circulated to stakeholders for the first time this week, finds that an integrated approach to decarbonising UK energy infrastructure could deliver significant savings.

The NIC report comes as the Government continues to develop decarbonisation policies for heat and transport necessary for the UK to meet its legally binding carbon emissions targets under the Fourth and Fifth Carbon Budgets.

The Energy Networks Association believes that a Whole-System Approach, based on our energy networks using new smart technologies to work more closely together in an integrated way, can build on the strength of our existing energy network assets to deliver decarbonisation at lowest cost.

ENA has called for the Government to investigate what role that approach could have as part of the Clean Growth Strategy.

David Smith, CEO of ENA, says: “Britain’s energy network operators are committed to creating an efficient, smarter, cleaner energy system fit for our homes and businesses. Decarbonising heat is one of the greatest challenges facing our energy system, and ENA welcomes the independent National Infrastructure Commission’s contribution to the evidence base on future options. Our power, heat, transport and waste sectors are all interdependent, and so must be the solutions for their decarbonisation.

“The NIC figures suggest that a Whole-System Approach to decarbonisation, which involves planning how to use our energy network infrastructure in a more integrated way by using low carbon gases like hydrogen, could save £55bn to 2050 compared to an electricity only solution.”

Mural commemorating Redheugh Gas Holder unveiled at St Philip Neri Roman Catholic School

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the North of England’s gas distributor, has unveiled a mural at St Philip Neri Roman Catholic School in Dunston, Gateshead, to commemorate the Redheugh Gas Holder.

For around 100 years gas holders were a vital part of the local gas supply system, responsible for supplying gas to thousands of people across the country. However, advances in technology and the enhanced capability of the modern-day gas network mean that gas holders are no longer in use.

In a bid to commemorate the gas holder in the local area, NGN approached the school where staff said an old wall on the school grounds was in need of repair. The school met with NGN’s Customer Care Officer Alex Brightman, and the plan for a mural to brighten up the wall and remember the history of the gas holder was agreed.

Children from the school visited the gas holder before it was demolished to see just how important they were to the gas industry and the local area. Following the visit, children produced their own artwork to compliment the mural that the gas distributor’s resident artist produced.

Mrs Valerie Douglass, Head Teacher at St Philip Neri Roman Catholic School, said: “The partnership work between our school and Northern Gas Networks was wonderful. The pupils who visited the gas holder now have a greater understanding of how important the gas industry was for the people of Dunston. All pupils were involved in producing artwork and we are delighted with our new wall mural which will be a lasting legacy to the gas holder at Redheugh, Gateshead.”

Alex Brightman, Customer Care Officer for Northern Gas Networks, said: “The mural at St Philip Neri Roman Catholic School will commemorate the gas holders for many years to come. We hope the children who showed so much creativity as part of this project will go on to tell their own children about how they helped create the mural that will be a lasting reminder of the history of the gas holder.”

NGN is a dedicated participant in the Considerate Constructor’s Scheme (CCS*) and continually seek out local community projects to support whilst carrying out work in the local area.

As part of a rolling programme NGN is aiming to dismantle 23 of the region’s gas holders by 2021 as part of continued investment in modernising the gas network. The gas holders will also be taken down in an environmentally responsible way, by recycling as many materials as possible.

Upper Hopton Community Association gets cooking thanks to Northern Gas Networks

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the North of England’s gas distributor, has helped Upper Hopton Community Association get cooking thanks to a £1,000 donation.

The Upper Hopton Community Association, a registered charity based in Upper Hopton, Mirfield, was established in 1980 to organise events and maintain the village hall at Croft House Community Centre, on Jackroyd Lane, for the local community.

NGN donated the funds to the community association after our engineers spotted the charity while they were  carrying out a gas mains replacement project in the area. A representative for the charity told us they needed a new range cooker, so they could continue to host local events and rent out the community hall.

Amy Hurd, Stakeholder Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “On behalf of Northern Gas Networks, it’s an honour to present Upper Hopton Community Association in Upper Hopton with this donation. We hope it allows the charity to continue using the facilities at Croft House Community Centre and support the local community.”

Roger Leedham, from Upper Hopton Community Association, said: “We would like to thank Northern Gas Networks for the very generous donation. The cooker will greatly improve the facilities available at Croft House Community Centre, for all the local residents and users of Croft House Community Centre.”

The replacement project was part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure and involves replacing the existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes. This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.
