£15,000 upgrade to gas network at Milton Road, Malton

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing around £15,000 to upgrade ageing gas mains in Milton Road, Malton.

This essential project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the area’s gas infrastructure and will involve replacing ageing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Malton for years to come.

The two-week project, which is due to start on Monday 7 August 2017, has been carefully planned, in conjunction with North Yorkshire County Council, to take place during the quieter school holiday period.

Due to the location of the gas main and in order to carry out the works safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to close a section of Highfield Road for the full duration of the project.

The road closure will be in place between the junction of Milton Avenue and Malton Primary School from Monday 7 August for approximately two weeks.  During this time access for residents only will be maintained.

A signed diversion route via Old Malton Road and Pasture Lane will be in place for motorists.

It’s expected these works may cause extended journey times, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel whilst the road closure is in place. NGN will endeavour to complete these works as soon as possible, and will provide updates on progress throughout the project.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers will be door-knocking local homes and businesses to make customers aware of the project, while on-site signage will advise motorists of the work taking place.

Robert Hope, Construction Services Area Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have worked closely with North Yorkshire County Council to carefully plan these works to take place during the school summer holidays, in order to minimise the disruption caused to members of the public.

“We will endeavour to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible and will keep customers updated as the work progresses.

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused during these works and thank everyone for their patience and support while we carry out this essential upgrade.”

For further information about the project please contact NGN’s Customer Care team on 0800 040 7766, option 3 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.

Northern Gas Networks promotes clean air for the North with hydrogen-powered car

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the North of England’s gas distributer, took delivery of a new hydrogen-powered car at its Thorpe Park offices in Leeds last month.

The car will be officially launched at the new inTEGReL facility near Newcastle in September, which, led by NGN, working with Newcastle University and Northern Powergrid and in partnership with the EPSRC National Centre for Energy Systems Integration, aims to become a UK leader in integrated technologies – removing the traditional barriers between gas, electricity and heat to create altogether more fluid and efficient ways to generate, store and transport energy.

The Mirai has an electric motor that drives the wheels just like an electric car but the difference lies in where the electricity is generated from. It is fuelled by hydrogen that is delivered to the ‘fuel cell,’ along with oxygen from the air, to chemically react and produce power in the form of electricity.

The car will be refuelled at ITM’s filling station in Rotherham, which is powered directly from a renewable wind turbine source, with the only tailpipe emission from the car being drinkable water.

Mark Horsley, Chief Executive Officer for Northern Gas Networks, said: “The Government’s announcement that the sale of petrol and diesel cars will be banned by 2040 is a stark reminder that we must do more if we are to meet the 2050 Climate Change Challenge.

We simply can’t do that with electric and hybrid vehicles alone as they aren’t a viable option for heavy vehicles and commercial fleet, or long-distance driving.”

The Toyota Mirari can travel almost three-times the distance of the average electric vehicle and takes less than five minutes to refuel in comparison of up to four-hours for a plug-in vehicle.

Unlike an electric car, that uses fossil fuels to produce the energy required to charge the car, hydrogen makes up 75% of the universe we live in and is in abundance compared to fossil fuels and produces no harmful exhaust emissions.

Mr Horsley continued: “For Britain to have a real chance of achieving its clear air quality targets, we must start to invest in the supporting infrastructure to make hydrogen fuel cell vehicles a truly viable and sustainable option.  Hydrogen is an extremely versatile source of energy, and all the evidence so far from our H21 project, indicates existing gas networks can be used to transport it.”

Northern Gas Networks’ H21 project provides compelling evidence to support UK gas grid conversion from natural gas (methane) to 100% hydrogen, using the city of Leeds as a blueprint. Further information about the project can be found at: www.northerngasnetworks.co.uk/futures

The hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai will join NGN’s green fleet of cars and will be used to promote hydrogen both internally and to external stakeholders as a fuel of the future for both heating and transport.

NGN currently has three CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles that are used to promote providing a cleaner, greener fuel alternative to petrol and diesel.

Update – £2.5m upgrade to Huddersfield gas distribution network

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £2.5m to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around Leeds Road and St Andrews Road, Huddersfield.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in Huddersfield and will involve replacing around 3km of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The ageing pipes, some of which are nearly 100 years old, have required a number of repairs in recent years. Therefore, NGN has prioritised them for replacement this year to minimise any future inconvenience for residents and road users.

The work on Leeds Road began in May and is due for completion in June 2018, having been planned in conjunction with Kirklees Council to ensure the scheme is completed with as little disruption as possible.

Phase three is progressing well with works currently taking place on Bradley Mills Road. Works will continue to take place on Bradley Mills Road for a further four-weeks before progressing on to Phase 4 on Monday 7 August.

During Phase 4, works will begin at the rear of Oaks Furniture Land and progress to the junction of the former Noor restaurant site. Whilst these works take place, it is necessary to introduce a lane closure to the westbound carriageway of Leeds Road from the junction of Bradley Mills Road, to the junction of St Andrews Road. This lane closure will start on Monday 14 August and will remain in place for approximately nine-weeks.

The lane closure will not be introduced until all traffic management measures are removed from Bradley Mills Road, and a seven-day working week shift will be adopted in order to complete this section of works as quickly as possible.

Works on St Andrews Road are also progressing well. At present, the right hand turn on Thistle Street from St Andrews Road is suspended and will remain like this for a further three-weeks. All other traffic routes on St Andrews Road remain as normal.

In order to ensure the safety of engineers and the public, a one-way system was introduced from the junction of Leeds Road to the junction of Gas Works Street which will remain in place for around 20-weeks.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door-knocking local businesses and residents to update them on progress and provide details of the traffic management plans.

Engineers will be working from Monday to Saturday between 8am and 4.30pm and NGN will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.
