H21 report brings regional stakeholders together to discuss economic opportunities for the North

Read

Pioneering plans to convert significant parts of the UK gas grid to be 100% hydrogen were presented in the North of England on Thursday, 6th October.

The proposals, which were unveiled to stakeholders from across the region by gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), are contained in the H21 Leeds City Gate report, which calls for the gas grid to be converted to hydrogen, starting with the Leeds city region and then for conversion to take place incrementally across the country.

NGN: The stakeholder event for the H21 project at Whitecloth gallery, Leeds, West Yorks., October 6 2016.

Left to right Mark Lewis, Low Carbon Consultant, Tees Valley Combined Authority, Cllr Lucinda Yeadon, Deputy Leader, Leeds City Council, Paul Hamer, Leeds City Region LEP Board, Gareth Mills and Dan Sadler of NGN

More than 50 stakeholders from the worlds of local authority, business and further education across Yorkshire and Teesside were welcomed to Leeds, to learn more about the next steps for the project and further explore the economic opportunities for the North that the study presents.

This regional launch follows the national launch event in Westminster in July where it was revealed that converting the UK gas grid to hydrogen will be a major step towards meeting the UK’s carbon reduction targets.

Currently, over 30% of all UK carbon emissions come from domestic heating and cooking. A UK-wide conversion to hydrogen gas will reduce heat emissions by a minimum of 73% as well as supporting decarbonisation of transport and localised electrical generation.

The North of England’s geology means it is uniquely positioned to undergo conversion, and the region would be the main beneficiary for the thousands of jobs created, potentially becoming an anchor project for the Northern Powerhouse.

H21 proposes that conversion to hydrogen in Leeds takes place as early as 2026-29, followed by a rollout across the UK that can be implemented as fast or slow as required.

Leeds, as the third largest city in the UK, has been identified as the most suitable area to start conversion to a hydrogen grid, due to its significant energy demand and geographical location. It has also received significant backing from local authorities and businesses including Leeds City Council, the Leeds City Region LEP and Tees Valley Unlimited LEP.

Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for environment and sustainability said: “We’re already looking at cutting emissions in a variety of ways so transforming Leeds into a hydrogen city would be a bold step. It represents a massive opportunity for the city and the north of England to lead a transition to a clean, low carbon economy.

“Leeds is the ideal city to test the concept as we’re in the perfect location with a wealth of research, innovation and skills on our doorstep.

“It was massively encouraging to hear the enthusiasm and interest in the project and we look forward to exploring the options further.”

Dan Sadler, H21 Project Manager at Northern Gas Networks, said: “It was fantastic to be able to share the report findings with so many influencers in the region and discuss and debate the opportunities for the North of England.

“To date there has never been a holistic solution presented to decarbonise heat in the UK. Converting the UK gas grid to hydrogen, starting with the network in Leeds, will be a major step towards meeting the UK’s carbon reduction targets and H21 could be that solution.

“Furthermore, a hydrogen gas network could become an anchor for further innovations in the sector, and in other industries such as transport and electricity generation. It’s an exciting opportunity for the North.”

Update: £190K upgrade to Moldgreen gas distribution network

Read

The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing around £190,000 to upgrade the ageing metal gas distribution network in Wakefield Road, Back Chapel Lane, and Smithy Lane, Moldgreen, Huddersfield.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and involves replacing around 350m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The 12-week project, which began on Monday 22, is progressing well and has been planned in conjunction with Kirklees Council to ensure all works are completed with as little disruption as possible.

The first phase of works on Wakefield Road has now been completed, and on Wednesday 28 September works moved to the surrounding side streets, which is expected to take around four weeks to finish.

From Monday 3 October works will take place on Chapel Lane for approximately two weeks, before moving to Old Wakefield Road from 17 October for another two weeks.

During this time, a road closure will be introduced from the junction of Church Street and Old Wakefield Road for two weeks, with a clearly signed diversion route in place for motorists to gain access via Brooke Street.

At the same time, engineers will also be working on the grass banking to the side of Wakefield Road.

After this phase is completed, works will resume on Wakefield Road from Monday 30 October outside the West Mount Veterinary Surgery. In order for engineers to carry out the work as safely and efficiently as possible, lane two of the outbound carriageway of Wakefield Road will be temporarily closed for five days. There will also be a lane closure on lane one of the inbound carriageway and on Smithy Lane at this time.

The final stage of the project will require engineers to work in the entire outbound carriageway, where a contraflow system will be introduced to allow traffic to safely flow in both directions.  Due to the complex nature of this part of the project, works will be carried out during the weekend to minimise disruption to road users

Finally, work will conclude on an area of private land.  NGN has liaised closely with the land owner to plan this phase and members of the public will not be affected. Engineers will also return to the junction of Chapel Street and Old Wakefield Road to decommission the old gas main however traffic will not be affected.

Engineers will be working Monday to Sunday from 8am to 5pm and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Paul Jagger, Construction Services Area Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Kirklees Council to carefully plan part of these works during school holidays in order to minimise disruption to customers.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting these works completed as quickly as possible.”

Mick’s Blog: A time for giving

Read

Well it’s not quite a time for giving, but it won’t be long. But we have been giving, we’ve been giving paintings away and I’m relieved to say no one has given them back yet!

As you may be aware we are taking down gas holders (big things that look like swimming pools) because they are no longer needed. Without getting too technical, gas holders used to hold gas, then feed it into our vast network of pipes which supply customers homes, then store it again, which is why they went up and down. But now we have a different system that uses pipes and valves. Interestingly, the pipes are cadmium yellow, which has just a hint of orange.

Because of this very function (the giving away bit) they had to be situated in residential and industrial areas. As a result, when it comes to the dismantling we have to rely heavily on the cooperation of the residents surrounding the site, remember I said they were big! So NGN being NGN we like to give something back, in this case paintings, which is handy, because we have a community artist, me!

Below are some photos of the paintings we gave away to the site residents of Penrith. The first two are paintings at Castle Park Penrith, (it’s a park with a castle in it) and the final one is a painting I made of a holder demolition.

Thanks to Richard Dawson and Mark Johnson for organising this.

Until next time.
