£300K upgrade to Bradford’s gas distribution network

The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is continuing its investment in Bradford with an £300,000 upgrade the ageing metal gas distribution network in North Avenue, Manningham Lane and Midland Road.

The major project is part of NGNs’ ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing 871m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to our customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which will commence on Monday 20 July, has been planned, in conjunction with Bradford City Council, with the first phase taking place during the quieter school holiday period in order to keep disruption to a minimum.

Ian Cunningham, Construction Services Area Manager Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Bradford City Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise any disruption caused.”

The project has been planned so that it is carried out in two phases with the first phase due to finish in August and the second phase in early November. In order to complete the works as quickly as possible engineers will be working 7 days a week from 8am – 5pm.

Phase 1: Works will begin on 20 July from the junction of North Avenue to the junction of Manningham Lane and will last approximately 10 weeks.

Phase 2: Works will begin on 7 September for approximately 8 weeks from the junction of Midland Road to the junction of Manningham Lane.

In order to carry out the work safety and efficiently it is necessary to close one lane on Queens Road for approximately 8 weeks from 20 July. This will affect anyone travelling from Manningham Lane onto Queens Road, however a short, signed diversion route will be in place.

As Queens Road is a major bus route in and out of Bradford, members of the public are being advised to expect some delays to bus services.  NGN has been liaising with the local bus companies to make them aware of any potential impact to their services.

Ian continued: “We know that no one likes roadworks and we want to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank customers in the area for their continued patience.  Our team of Customer Care Officers has been door knocking residents in the area to make them aware of the work.  We’re asking customers that live on Queens Road to park at the rear of their properties while the lane closure is in place and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

All pedestrian access will be maintained with footpaths remaining open at all times. To ensure that pedestrians can cross the road safely a temporary pedestrian crossing will be in place on Queens Road during the first 8 weeks of the project

Vital upgrade to Keswick’s ageing gas mains

The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), will be starting work in September to upgrade ageing metal gas mains in Keswick.

The project is part of NGN’s on-going development of infrastructure across the north of England and involves replacing 275m of existing metallic gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The essential work, which is expected to take around 8 weeks to complete, has been carefully planned in conjunction with Cumbria County Council, Keswick Town Council and the Chair of Tourism to avoid the busy Christmas period and minimise the impact on shops and businesses in the town.

The project will commence on Monday 31 August at Greta Side for two weeks before moving into Brewery Lane for a further two weeks. A phased road closure will be in place during this time.

In October the work will transfer to Victoria Street.  The road will remain open to traffic with temporary traffic lights in operation.   Further work will take place in the New Year, after the Christmas break when it will be necessary to close part of Victoria Street, for approximately seven days. Diversion routes will be in place and clearly sign posted. Access will remain open to Bell Close and Otley Road car parks.

Northern Gas Networks Site Manager, James Telford said;

“We’re working closely with Cumbria County Council to minimise disruption for residents, businesses and road users in the town and we’d like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause and thank members of the public for their patience and support.

“Our Customer Care Officers and Site Managers will be door knocking customers and visiting local businesses to talk to them about the work and address any concerns.  In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently it will be necessary to install temporary traffic lights and install a road closure for part of the project.  We will do everything we can to minimise disruption to members of the public during this time including providing parking in the Otley Road car park for residents who may not be able to park outside their homes.

“We will also be working closely with local schools and holding community forums for the local residents before and during the project in order to keep everyone updated about the works and provide a chance for customers to ask any questions that they may have.”

Essential upgrade planned for Shipley and Baildon’s gas mains

The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £180,000 to replace around 300 metres of ageing metal gas mains in the Shipley and Baildon area with new durable plastic pipes.

The eight week project, which is scheduled to start on Monday 13 July 2015, is part of the company’s ongoing investment in the area which will see around £4.5 million⃰   invested in Shipley and Baildon’s gas pipe infrastructure by the end of 2015.

The essential work, which is planned for completion in early September, will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers living and working in the area for years to come, has been carefully planned in conjunction with Bradford City Council.

To minimise disruption to members of the public, the work will be carried out in three phases, with part of the project completed during the quieter school holiday period.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to close one lane on the Otley Road throughout the duration of the project.  Engineers will be working 7 days a week throughout the project in order to complete the work as quickly as possible.

Phase 1 (From Monday 13 July): The project will commence at night time at the junction of Dockfield Road and the Otley Road and will continue for two – three weeks. Temporary three way traffic lights will be in operation between 8pm and 6am.  A night time, access only road closure will also be in place on Dockfield Road.  Local businesses have been informed so that they can make alternative arrangements. Sound barriers will be used to minimise noise levels during nighttime working.

Phase 2 (From Monday 27 July): Work will continue from the junction of Dockfield Road and the Otley Road to the junction of Viewcroft Road and the Otley Road for around two – three weeks.   Engineers will be working 7 days a week from 8am – midnight.

Phase 3 (From Monday 10 August): Work will be carried out at the junction of Viewcroft Road and Briggate for approximately three weeks. Engineers will be working from 8am – midnight, 7 days a week.

Ian Cunningham, Construction Services Area Manager, Northern Gas Networks said; “We know that the Otley Road is a really busy stretch, particularly during peak commuting hours for customers travelling between Bradford and Leeds, so we have planned for part of the project to take place during the quieter school holiday period to help to ease traffic flow.

“We have also made the decision to extend much of the work into the quieter evening and night time period. To minimise the disruption caused to customers, in particular passing traffic, engineers will be working from 8pm – 6am, seven days a week for the first stage of the project.  Seven day working will continue thereafter with engineers working from 8am – midnight. Weekend working will help to ensure that the work is completed as soon as possible.

He added, “We know that no one likes roadworks, so please be assured that we’ll do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum.  We’d like to thank customers in advance for their patience throughout these essential improvement works and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

During the final week of the project, which will be on or around 1 September, works will take place in the footpath which will result in a footpath closure. At all other times footpaths will remain open with restricted access in some places – in these instances a footway will be provided. Shops and businesses will remain open as usual and parking facilities will not be affected. All bus stops are in operation as usual but members of the public are being warned to expect some delays to bus services.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door knocking homes and businesses in the area to inform them about the project, and answer any questions or concerns they may have.

NGN is currently in the process of planning a further scheme to replace 200m of ageing gas mains on Baildon Road at the junction with Station Road. This will involve a single lane closure on Baildon Road and it will be necessary to install temporary two-way traffic lights.

Wakefield city centre to benefit from vital upgrade to gas mains

The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £400,000 to replace around 530m of ageing metal gas mains in the Wakefield city centre with new durable plastic pipes.

The upgrade, which is scheduled to start on Monday 13 July 2015, is part of the company’s ongoing investment in the area which will see more than £6 million* invested in the city’s gas pipe infrastructure by the end of the year.

The essential work, which is expected to take 17 weeks to complete, will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers living and working in the city for years to come.

The project has been carefully planned in conjunction with Wakefield City Council and will commence on Greenwood Road and then progress on to Stanley Road.  The final phase of the work will take place on Jacobs Well Lane.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently, a single lane closure and temporary two-way traffic lights will be in place on Greenwood Road from Monday 13 July for approximately two weeks.

As work progresses the lane closure will move to Stanley Road with temporary traffic lights at the junction of Greenwood Road and Stanley Road, moving down Stanley Road and finally at the junction of Jacobs Well Lane and Stanley Road.

It is expected that all work in the road will be complete by September when the lane will reopen and work will move to the central reservation on Jacobs Well Road. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

“We’ve planned the project carefully so that the majority of the work in the road is taking place during the quieter school holiday period which we hope will help to ease traffic flow in the area. Our engineers will be working during the weekend throughout the project in order to complete the work as quickly as possible.”

Wakefield to benefit from vital upgrade to gas mains

The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £250,000 to replace around 900m of ageing metal gas mains in the Sandal area of Wakefield with new durable plastic pipes.

The upgrade, which is scheduled to start on Monday 6 July 2015, is part of the company’s ongoing investment in the area which will see more than £6 million* invested in the city’s gas pipe infrastructure by the end of the year.

The essential work, which will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers living and working Sandal for years to come, has been carefully planned in conjunction with Wakefield City Council.

To minimise disruption to members of the public, the work will be carried out in four phases, with the majority of the first half of the project completed during the quieter school holiday period.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to operate temporary traffic lights during phases 1 and 2 of the scheme. These traffic lights will be manned via CCTV between the hours of 7am – 7pm, to help ease traffic flow in the area.

Phase 1 (July 2015): Work will commence on Monday 6 July 2015 at the junction of Barnsley Road and Standbridge Lane and continue along Standbridge Lane. In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently it will be necessary to install temporary three-way traffic lights at this junction.

Phase 2 (August 2015): Work will continue along Standbridge Lane from The Star Inn to the Asda roundabout. Temporary two-way traffic lights will be in operation along Standbridge Lane throughout this phase.

Phase 3 (August / September 2015): Work will progress along Standbridge Lane.

Phase 4 (September / October 2015): Work will be carried out in Kingsley Avenue and Barnsley Road.

Festival goers urged to stay CO savvy this festival season

A worrying number of festival goers aren’t aware of the risks of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning while camping at festivals, a safety campaign is warning.

#TunesnotFumes will raise the profile online about risks of poisoning through the use of BBQs, stoves and heaters at festival campsites.

In an online poll, over one in three (37%) said they’d use a gas cooker inside a tent; a fifth (19%) said they would use a cooking appliance to warm up a tent if it was cold; one in seven (15%) said they’d bring a BBQ inside a tent to finish off the cooking if it was raining*.

A third of the survey respondents said they went to a festival in the past 12 months yet while two thirds (65%) knew there was a risk of a gas explosion while using a cooking stove, only a quarter (25%) knew about the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The research highlights that clueless festival goers are putting themselves at risk of carbon monoxide – a dangerous colourless, odourless gas which killed 40 people last year in England and Wales and caused approximately 4,000 to be admitted to hospital.**

Specifically targeting young festival goers aged 18 – 24, #tunesnotfumes will educate about the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, as well as the dangers of using a barbecue or cooking stove inside a tent or in its porch.  At gdngames.co.uk, @iFest15 on Twitter and iFEST15 on Facebook festival goers can play iFEST, the free online game, as well as search through tips and learn about the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning and how to stay safe.

Barry Sheerman MP, co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group and spokesperson for #TunesnotFumes said: “We found it worrying to see that this isn’t about young people ignoring the dangers and choosing to take risks. Instead they simply aren’t aware of the dangers. An increasing number of young people fall ill because they don’t realise that bringing a BBQ inside their tent, or using a stove to warm them up when it’s cold cause result in fatal poisoning.”

He adds, “Festival goers are often warned about the dangers of alcohol and drug taking while at a summer festival. We want carbon monoxide to be ranked as highly as those for potential risks young people should be aware of. Our message is simple, let the music at a festival take your breath away, not carbon monoxide”.

 #TunesnotFumes raises the profile of carbon monoxide poisoning and encourages festival goers to look out for symptoms like nausea, excessive tiredness and blurred vision. It’s also reminding festival goers to never bring a BBQ or cooking equipment into their tent, even onto the tent porch while they sleep.

Every week the campaign is giving away festival survival kits including ponchos, glow sticks and ear plugs as well as CO alarms to use in tents.

Emergency repair work Shadwell Park Drive, Leeds

Engineers from Northern Gas Networks are carrying out emergency repair work to a medium pressure gas main on the junction of Park Lane and Shadwell Park Drive, Leeds.

In order to carry out this work safely and efficiently it will be necessary to close Park Lane from the junction of the A6120 to the junction of Shadwell Lane overnight whilst work on the gas leak is completed.

A signed diversion will be clearly marked for motorists and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Access will be provided for residents

Northern Gas Networks is investing more than £170,000 to upgrade over 2km of ageing metallic gas mains in the Lower Wortley Road area of Leeds.

The project is part of Northern Gas Networks’ ongoing development of infrastructure across the north of England and will involve replacing existing metallic gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to our customers in the area for years to come.

The twelve week project, will commence on Monday 1 June, in Whitehall Road and will progress towards Fawcett Avenue.

A part of this project work will also be carried out in the follow roads:

  • Whitehall Road
  • Walkers Lane
  • Walkers Green
  • Ryedale Avenue
  • Ryedale Holt
  • Greenville Gardens
  • Lower Wortley Road
  • Fawcett Avenue

In order to carry out our work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to close Royds Lane from Monday 15 June for a period of two weeks.

Businesses in the area will remain open as usual and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Northern Gas Networks is carrying out essential work to upgrade the gas distribution network in Marske by the sea.

The project is part of Northern Gas Networks’ ongoing development of infrastructure across the north of England and will involve replacing existing metallic gas main with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to our customers in the area for years to come.

The eight week project will commence on The Wynd on Monday 1 June.

In order to carry out this work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to install temporary four way traffic lights when approaching the central roundabout from Monday 1 June for eight weeks.

Significant New Maintenance Contract for NGN

The north of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) has signed a major new contract with Penspen to cover all mechanical maintenance work required across the network.

As of early May 2015, provider of engineering, project management and asset management services, Penspen will take responsibility for maintaining a wide range of mechanical equipment on behalf of NGN, from gas off-take equipment to district governors as part of the three year contract.

This new partnership with the integrity, engineering, operations and maintenance specialist is a significant move for NGN as it marks the first time that a gas distributor in the UK has outsourced all of its mechanical maintenance requirements.

Tim Harwood, head of major projects and maintenance at NGN, said: “Penspen has been appointed after a long and thorough tender process. As experts in the maintenance of pipelines and associated plant equipment they have a strong combination of technical and commercial acumen, with highly skilled employees, supported by the company’s own in-house training school.

“This is an exciting move for our business, as we continue to modernise and work in a smarter and more efficient way. Other gas distribution networks will certainly be taking notes, and we could see this model adopted in other parts of the UK in the coming years.”

As part of the new arrangement, a number of highly skilled NGN employees who currently work in mechanical maintenance positions will transfer to Penspen to carry out the same job roles but under new employers. To assist with the transition, Penspen has provided new vehicles and IT to prepare the transferring staff for their new challenge.

Explaining the move, Tim said: “Penspen colleagues will become an extension of our team in the coming months as our NGN colleagues move to their new employers. Existing Penspen staff will be working with transferring staff to make new teams; it will be a seamless transition with business as usual the main focus.

“It is an interesting time to be head of maintenance, working with great teams both within NGN and with Penspen.”

NGN will retain maintenance supervisory and managerial staff who will be ensuring safety standards, technical compliance and quality control is met.

Peter O’Sullivan, Chief Executive of Penspen, said: “This is the first time one of the major gas distributors for the UK has outsourced its maintenance work to one company and we are delighted that Northern Gas Networks has chosen Penspen. We have a dedicated training facility with the capability to train technicians in high pressure gas maintenance services and this is one of the reasons we have been selected for the substantial project.”
