NGN wins 50 Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) will receive 50 awards at this year’s Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) National Site Awards.

NGN distributes gas to 2.7 million homes and businesses to cities and towns including Newcastle, Darlington, Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield, Hull, York and Carlisle. It also provides the region’s rapid response team when a smell of gas is reported.

A total of 54 NGN sites across the North East, Northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire were nominated for an award, with 50 sites being confirmed as award winners.

The type of award (gold, silver or bronze) will be announced on the night of the Awards ceremony in Spring 2019.

Since 1999, the CCS has been rewarding the UK’s most considerate sites for the contribution they have made towards improving the image of construction.

It looks at the measures a site has put in place to be more considerate towards local neighbourhoods and the public, the workforce and the environment.

All NGN projects scheduled to take more than six weeks to complete are registered with the CCS and NGN is now rolling out CCS principles to all sites, including Emergency & Repair and Connections projects.

Tim Harwood, Head of Programme Management for Northern Gas Networks, said: “The fact we have received so many nominations and awards this year is testament to the hard work of our teams, who strive to make sure all our sites observe CCS best practice in terms of appearance, protecting the environment, safety, valuing the workforce and respect for neighbouring communities.

“As the first gas distribution network to sign up to the CCS, this achievement shows the commitment NGN has made towards ensuring our works have minimal impact on communities and that we’re delivering the best experience we can for our customers and our engineers. I’m incredibly proud of all our colleagues who have worked so hard to produce such excellence.”

NGN is dedicated to maintaining its high standards on site, both for its customers and contractors. The company is constantly monitoring best practice and in doing so, regularly improving its processes and site efficiency.

Anyone that smells gas or suspects Carbon Monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Chester-Le-Street road closure for emergency gas work

Read

Picktree Lane, off the A1M roundabout in Chester-Le-Street, is closed today (February 6) in both directions, due to emergency gas work. A diversion route is in place.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN),  the North of England’s gas distributor, is carrying out emergency repair work to a damaged medium pressure gas main. The company is liaising closely with the highways authority and local council.

The damaged pipe does not present a public safety risk, and no evacuations have been necessary.

The closure is expected to cause considerable delays to journey times, especially during peak rush hour.

Andy Coates, NGN site manager said:  “We’d like to apologise to motorists for any delays to their jouney times today.

“We’ve had to close Picktree Lane in both directions, in order to carry out this emergency repair. Our engineering teams are doing everything possible to get the situation resolved, and the road reopened, as quickly as possible.”

Essential upgrade to gas distribution network in Seaton, Cumbria

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £380k to upgrade the gas distribution network in Seaton Main Road and Milburn Croft Seaton, Workington.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing approximately 5km of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones.  This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which started in Seaton Main Road in November 2018, has been carefully planned in conjunction with Cumbria County Council to minimise any disruption caused.

Engineers are currently working across several different sites; Main Road, Milburn Croft, Braeside and Princess Avenue. Over the coming weeks, work will progress into Kings Avenue and Coronation Avenue.

In order for work to be carried out safely and efficiently, it has been necessary to install temporary three-way traffic signals on Seaton Main Road. These will be in place until Friday 15th February.

It will be necessary to implement further temporary traffic management measures as work progresses.

NGN will provide detailed updates, and will ensure advance notification signs for road users and alternative routes for pedestrians are in place whilst works are being carried out.

The project is expected to be complete by mid-April.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have door knocked local residents and businesses to make customers aware of the work. Regular updates will also be available on NGN’s website northerngasnetworks.co.uk, Twitter @NGNgas and Facebook @northerngasnetworks.

Steven Miller, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Cumbria County Council to carefully plan these works and will continue to do all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank everyone for their continued support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”

Funding boost brings warm cheer to local communities this winter

Read

Seven community groups and charities across the North of England have received grants of up to £10,000 each to help make their local communities warmer, safer and more prosperous.

The funding came from the Community Partnering Fund – a scheme run by Northern Gas Networks, Northern Powergrid and Leeds Community Foundation.

Building on work over the past three years, the scheme provides funding for grass roots initiatives which tackle issues such as fuel poverty and household safety, encourage an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects, or promote the Priority Services Register — a free support service for energy customers in vulnerable situations.

The latest funding recipients range from a South Asian community radio station in Leeds, an education specialist working with refugees and asylum seekers in Hull, a community centre in Carlisle and a Sheffield food bank.

Tom Bell, Northern Gas Networks’ Head of Social Strategy said: “As the region’s gas distributor, we work in communities which face a complex range of issues – from a high prevalence of fuel poverty to lack of opportunities and aspirations among young people.

“We are excited to be working with these remarkable organisations who are making a massive difference to their communities.

“Each organisation will be using the funding to deliver a new, bespoke project themed around energy efficiency, safety or education. We can’t wait to see these projects take shape.”

Siobhan Barton, Head of Stakeholder Relations at Northern Powergrid, said: “Merging our fund with Northern Gas Networks provides us with a greater opportunity to engage with community groups and local charities who are delivering innovative projects in our key areas of focus, as well as raising awareness of our Priority Services Register.”

Kate Hainsworth, Chief Executive of Leeds Community Foundation said: “The fact that this funding scheme is now in its third year, and has gained combined support from the region’s gas and electricity distributors, is fantastic news for communities across the North of England.

“We are delighted to be working with Northern Gas Networks and Northern Powergrid to help administer the programme and are looking forward to seeing targeted support to communities through this year’s projects.”

The latest funding winners are:

Success4All:a non-profit organisation in Newcastle-upon-Tyne that provides low-cost tuition for children and young people aged 8-18. The organisation will be using the funding to run a six-weeks ‘hands-on’ project for young people, exploring energy efficiency and innovative ways of producing energy. The young people will also meet gas and electrical engineers, to see how they keep the energy flowing around the region.

Grace Food Bank: A Sheffield based food bank which distributes donated food to those in need. The funding will be used to top up the gas and electricity pre-payment cards of food bank users, so they can access heating, lighting and hot water, and have a more comfortable winter.

Speakup Self Advocacy: A national charity which advances the education of people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health in self-advocacy and related areas. The funding will be used to work with people with learning disabilities and autism to create a Carbon Monoxide safety film, titled, “I Can’t Smell It, So It Must Be Safe!” A group of energy efficiency champions will also be established to share tips for saving energy.

Toranj Tuition: a newly-established not for profit organisation based in Hull which improves education for disadvantaged children and promotes equality for all ages. Funding will be used to deliver English as a second language tuition  to asylum seekers and refugees, through sharing essential household information such as energy efficiency, household budgeting  and Carbon Monoxide awareness. Mentoring sessions around STEM subjects will also be provided for young people.

Radio Asian Fever: a community radio station serving Asian communities in Leeds and beyond. Funding will be used to develop radio content in Hindu, Urdu, Punjabi, English and Mipuri, with topics focusing including energy efficiency, reducing bills and Carbon Monoxide awareness.

Botcherby Community Centre, Carlisle:   A community centre in the heart of Carlisle, offering everything from parent and toddler groups to a lunch club for older people Funding will train community champions across Carlisle to promote energy efficiency advice.

Northumberland Community Enterprise Limited: a non-profit organisation based in Morpeth which aims to tackle unemployment in order to benefit local communities. The funding will be used to promote energy efficiency and Carbon Monoxide awareness among elderly residents who are often socially isolated due to lack of mobility, or remote location.
