Essential upgrade to gas distribution network on High Street, Starbeck

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing more than £20,000 to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network on High Street, Starbeck in Harrogate.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure and will involve replacing the existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes. This will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

Starting on Saturday 4 August, the one-week project has been carefully planned in conjunction with North Yorkshire County Council to minimise any impact caused. Due to the nature of the works, ‘Stop and Go’ boards will be used throughout the day whilst three-way lights will be used at all other times.

It’s expected these works may cause some delays to journey times, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel.

Steve Goodwin, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with North Yorkshire County Council to carefully plan these works in order to minimise any disruption to customers.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting them completed as quickly as possible.”

For further information about the project please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.

Northern Gas Networks supports The Canopy Housing Project to train ‘energy ambassadors’

Read

The Canopy Housing Project, based in Leeds, has benefitted from a grant of more than £6,000 from the North of England’s gas distributor Northern Gas Networks (NGN).

The organisation will use the grant, from NGN’s Community Promises Fund*, to train volunteers as ‘energy ambassadors’ who will work together with housing tenants to educate them on the best ways of keeping warm, using appliances and avoiding condensation in Victorian properties with solid wall construction. They also hope to produce an educational video in various languages.

Laura Barker, from The Canopy Housing Project, said: “We are thrilled to have been supported by Northern Gas Networks. This funding will not only allow us to educate and inform households on low-incomes but also help those who might be out of work learn valuable skills that will help with their employability.”

Tom Bell, Head of Social Strategy at Northern Gas Networks, said: “Northern Gas Networks are really pleased to be able to offer The Canopy Housing Project a grant as part of our Community Promises Fund.

As part of the application the judging panel felt that they offered an innovative project, utilising local volunteers and creating a sustainable impact on the local community.

“As well as the grant we’ll also be supporting The Canopy Housing Project, and the other organisations who have been awarded a grant, with any other support they might need; such as volunteering opportunities or how they can share best practice with one another.

“Community groups, and other local organisations, play a fundamental role in helping to identify and assist those who are in need and I’m very much looking forward to working with them on their exciting projects and their efforts to help make a difference to local people’s lives.”

*The Canopy Housing Project received the grand as part of NGN’s £50,000 Community Promises Fund.

The fund, which is now in its second year, offers grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 to third sector organisations and community groups with innovative approaches to delivering sustainable initiatives associated with energy saving, fuel poverty, Carbon Monoxide awareness, raising the profile of the Priority Services Register (PSR) and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects across areas of the North of England.

After applying at the end of last year, the nine projects benefiting from the 2018 funding programme are: Age UK in Gateshead, Citizen Advice in Newcastle, Community Voice FM Ltd in Cleveland, Hartlepower C.I.C. in Hartlepool, Highfield Food Co-op in Keighley, National Energy Action, Stockton and District Advice, Information Service (SDAIS), The Canopy Housing Project in Leeds and Yorkshire Energy Doctor CIC.

Northern Gas Networks supports cross-party hydrogen group launch

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) joined its fellow UK gas distributers to support the launch of an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Hydrogen which held its first AGM today (Tuesday 3rd July).

Chaired by Redcar MP Anna Turley, the cross-party group of MPs and Peers has been created to focus on raising awareness and building support for large scale hydrogen projects, enabling the UK to meet its tough 2050 decarbonisation targets.

Shadow Energy Minister Alan Whitehead attended the event, which has also received the backing of Minister for Energy and Clean Growth Claire Perry MP.

Rt Hon Claire Perry MP, Minister for Energy and Clean Growth, has welcomed the establishment of the APPG on Hydrogen. She said:

“Hydrogen shows huge potential as a vector in a clean, safe, flexible, future energy system; which is why we’re investing over £60m in hydrogen projects as part of our modern industrial strategy. The creation of this group shows the increasing excitement around hydrogen and the role it can play in meeting the Clean Growth Grand Challenge.”

Alan Whitehead, Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change, said: “We strongly welcome this new APPG.

“We expect hydrogen technology to play a key role in clean heavy transport and cutting emissions in the heating sector.”

The ultimate clean gas, hydrogen is zero carbon at the point of use, producing just heat and water when burned.

NGN, the gas distributer for the North of England, Northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire, is leading industry projects examining hydrogen for use in the gas network.

Its pioneering H21 Leeds City Gate project used the city of Leeds as a blueprint to prove that conversion of the UK gas networks from natural gas to hydrogen was technically possible and could be delivered at a reasonable cost in order to decarbonise UK heat.

The H21 programme has now expanded into a joint-network project supported by £9 million on Ofgem innovation funding, focused on delivering the essential safety evidence required for a conversion of the gas grid to carry 100% hydrogen.

This work is mirrored by the government’s own £25 million ‘Hy4Heat’ programme, designed to examine hydrogen for use in buildings and create a stimulus for appliance manufacturers.

Hydrogen’s role in the UK’s future energy mix continues to gain government interest, the green gas named as one of three plausible pathways to decarbonisation in 2017’s Clean Growth Strategy.

As well as gaining the support of the Energy and Utilities Alliance, the creation of the APPG has also received the backing of UNISON and the GMB. Both trade unions support the development of large scale hydrogen projects due to their ability to create and sustain thousands of jobs.

Mark Horsley, CEO of Northern Gas Networks said: “This APPG has an important role to play in raising parliamentary awareness of large-scale hydrogen projects, and we’re delighted to support the group’s launch today.

“Hydrogen can make up a crucial part of the UK’s future energy mix, and greater understanding by MPs of that role, and hydrogen’s huge potential for job creation and delivering cleaner, greener energy to customers, is essential in strengthening its development as we look towards 2050.”

Anna Turley, Labour MP for Redcar and a member of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee said a conversion to hydrogen would be valuable for her constituency, as well the UK.

She continued: “The Tees Valley area strongly supports the development of large scale hydrogen projects, as we already produce 50% of all hydrogen produced in the UK.

“I’m excited about the potential of hydrogen to enable the country to significantly decrease our carbon emissions, create lots of good long-term job opportunities and position the UK as a global leader in green technology.

“This group will work to raise awareness of the latest research and innovations in hydrogen technology, and work constructively with central government, local authorities and industry to support its development.”

For further information about the APPG or NGN’s Energy Futures projects please contact NGN’s Press Office team on 0113 322 7950 or email: communications@northerngas.co.uk
