Northern Gas Networks backs Committee on Climate Change report call to speed up hydrogen decision

Read

The North of England’s gas network, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), has welcomed the findings of today’s Progress Report published by the Committee on Climate Change (28 June 2018).

The public body, which advises the UK and parliament on tackling and preparing for Climate Change, has urged the Government to escalate preparations on a strategic decision around the use of hydrogen for heat, adding that options need to be developed ‘now’ in order to meet the requirements of the 2050 Climate Change Act.

Northern Gas Networks CEO Mark Horsley

Mark Horsley, Chief Executive Officer for Northern Gas Networks said: “Hydrogen has a crucial role to play in the UK’s future energy mix, providing a secure, safe supply of low-carbon energy for customers, delivered at a reasonable cost.

“We support the findings of today’s Progress Report, and look forward to working closely with national and local government in order to coordinate solutions which can deliver cleaner, greener energy to our customers in the years to come.”

The Progress Report said reliance on natural gas is incompatible with long-term decarbonisation and stressed that a framework which can drive long-term decisions on heat infrastructure should be placed within the scope of the Heat Strategic Options paper scheduled for this summer.

The report states: “Active preparations must continue for strategic decisions in the early 2020s on the role of hydrogen for heat, and the future of the gas grid. We should be developing options now.

“It is essential that the Government continues to develop the evidence base, particularly on safety critical aspects such as the risk of leakages from existing pipework in homes, so that a decision on the future of the gas grid can be made in the early 2020s – it is important that this timeline does not slip, given the scale of changes required by 2050.”

It added that any future decision to decarbonise heat using low carbon hydrogen will require substantial domestic production of hydrogen created through natural gas reforming, with extensive and carbon capture and storage needed to sequester emissions.

The ultimate clean gas, hydrogen is zero carbon at the point of use, producing just heat and water when burned.

Northern Gas Networks, which delivers gas to around 6.8 million customers throughout northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire, is leading industry projects examining hydrogen for use in the gas network.

In 2016, its pioneering H21 Leeds City Gate report used the city of Leeds as a blueprint to prove that conversion of the UK gas networks from natural gas to hydrogen was technically possible and could be delivered at a reasonable cost in order to decarbonise UK heat.

The H21 programme has now expanded into a joint-network project supported by £9 million on Ofgem innovation funding, focused on delivering the essential safety evidence required for a conversion of the gas grid to carry 100% hydrogen.

This work is mirrored by the government’s own £25 million ‘Hy4Heat’ programme, designed to examine hydrogen for use in buildings and create a stimulus for appliance manufacturers.

Hydrogen’s role in the UK’s future energy mix continues to gain government interest, the green gas named as one of three plausible pathways to decarbonisation in 2017’s Clean Growth Strategy.

Carbon Monoxide Charity Fund welcomes applications

Read

The Gas Distribution Networks (GDN’s) across the UK have launched their Carbon Monoxide (CO) Charity Fund, inviting UK charities and organisations to apply for funding to support CO related initiatives.

Following the fund’s successful launch last year the GDN’s are pleased to once again launch this year’s fund. The GDN’s will consider applications on an annual basis and award one-off grants up to the value of £10,000 from the fund.

Northern Gas Networks, in partnership with Cadent, SGN and Wales & West Utilities, are hopeful the fund will encourage new and innovative ideas around raising awareness of the risks, dangers and symptoms of CO and the prevention of further CO poisoning cases in the UK.

Tom Bell, Head of Social Strategy at Northern Gas Networks and Chair of the GDN CO Best Practice Group, said: “We are pleased that GDN’s across the UK have collaborated to set up this important fund, providing support to charities and other organisations who already work on CO related initiatives and engaging new charities with fresh ideas to get involved.

“After the launch today, we look forward to receiving and considering all applications over the next few months.”

The deadline for application submissions is Friday 31 August. Following the deadline, the GDN’s will meet in October to review the applicants. Anyone wishing to find out more, or to download an application form, should visit: www.energynetworks.org/gas/she/co-charity-fund-2018.html

CO is a poisonous, colourless and odourless gas that can lead to dizziness, nausea, tiredness, loss of breath and potential death.

The Department of Health estimates around 4,000 people attending accident and emergency departments in the UK are diagnosed with CO poisoning. Accurate numbers are however difficult to determine because the signs and symptoms of CO poisoning are very similar to other common illnesses and so can often be misdiagnosed by health professionals.

The Carbon Monoxide Charity Fund has been established off the back of NGN’s Community Promises Fund framework. The fund offers grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 to third sector organisations and community groups with innovative approaches to delivering sustainable initiatives associated with energy saving, fuel poverty, Carbon Monoxide awareness, raising the profile of the Priority Services Register (PSR) and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects across areas of the North of England.

As part of Clean Air Day* (Thursday 21 June), the North of England’s gas distributor Northern Gas Networks (NGN), has launched its new Environment Strategy in a bit to create a greener, cleaner future.

The strategy aims to ‘put environment at the heart of everything we do and work to enhance communities from a local to a global scale’ and has been underpinned by the gas distributor’s four business objectives that include delivering outstanding customer experience, guaranteeing value for money, looking after colleagues and creating lasting energy solutions.

This strategy looks to 2030 and beyond and presents an opportunity for the business to be proactive in deciding its environmental direction whilst ensuring that current and future environmental risks and opportunities are effectively recognised and addressed.

Mark Horsley, Chief Executive Officer for Northern Gas Networks, said: “In the UK poor air quality is estimated to contribute to the shortening of lives of around 40,000 people a year, often by undermining the health of people with heart and lung problems. It’s also a huge problem globally- and the primary aim of Clean Air Day is to raise awareness of this issue.

“At NGN we’re committed to reducing our environmental impact on the customers and communities that we serve, and where possible make a positive impact.

“This strategy demonstrates our commitment to this over the short, medium and long term through clear action areas, including: taking action against climate change, improving air quality, using resources responsibly, enhancing life on land and creating lasting energy solutions.”

NGN to drive into the future at Innovation Festival

Read

Northern Gas Networks will take a drive into the future this July at the Northumbrian Water Innovation Festival.

The gas distributer for the North of England is leading the Future Fleet sprint at the annual five-day event held at Newcastle Racecourse, between July 9-13.

NGN’s hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai

Bringing around 1,000 of the UK’s most creative minds together to harness pioneering thinking and unique ideas, the festival is an opportunity to present current industry challenges and work through solutions in order to generate new innovations and products.

NGN’s sprint will focus on the future of transport, exploring travel trends, clean fuels and new vehicles, discussing key issues, challenges and their potential impact on industry, with the aim of finding new ways to tackle them.

Held in collaboration with VLP and Northumbrian Water, the sessions will be facilitated by experts from a wide range of related companies, including Green Road, Toyota and IVECO.

Transport is a key focus for the gas distributer, as the UK looks towards a cleaner, greener energy future.

Finding low carbon ways to power its fleet while minimising impact on the environment has seen NGN exploring new options in last few years, including compressed natural gas vehicles and hydrogen cars.

Among the questions being covered will be:

  • What type of fuel will we all be using to power journeys in the future?
  • Will we continue to buy and own vehicles, or just rent as we need?
  • How would any radical changes affect our working lives?
  • And what impact might they have on our homes and living spaces?

Keith Owen, Head of Systems Development and Energy Strategy at Northern Gas Networks said: “As the UK continues its journey to decarbonisation, we cannot overlook the impact of transport and its contribution to carbon emissions. At the moment, the vehicles we use for our everyday journeys rely on fossil fuels but it’s time to look beyond these.

“The Future Fleet sprint will explore innovative new options and pioneering technology which could transform transport in the UK. From compressed natural gas and electric to hydrogen, we’ll be examining the impact they could have on our lives, our homes and on industry.”

To find out what the Future Fleet sprint team comes up with during the festival you can follow all of the action live on social media by following @NGNgas on twitter and facebook or by visiting www.innovationfestival.org.
