£570k upgrade to Burley in Wharfedale gas distribution network

Read

The north of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing more than £570k, to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around Langford Lane, Burley in Wharfedale.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing approximately 5km of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones. This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which began last April, has been planned in conjunction with Bradford Metropolitan District Council to ensure all works are completed with as little disruption as possible.

In order to complete the works safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to introduce a road closure from tomorrow (Tuesday 6 March) on Moor Lane and Station Road, between Hag Farm Road and Station Approach, for approximately two weeks. During this time, an alternative signed diversion route will be via Station Road, Main Street, Bradford Road, Burley Road, Bradford Road, Bingley Road, Hillings Lane and Moor Lane (or by this route reversed).

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Anna Mycoe, Business Operational Leader Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have been working closely with Bradford Metropolitan District Council to carefully plan these works in order to minimise any disruption to customers.

Northern Gas Networks digs in to help Carlisle community

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the north of England’s gas distributor, came to the rescue of Barrock Court Care Home in Carlisle yesterday (Thursday 1 March).

Members of staff, based at NGN’s Carlisle depot, were unable to carry out pipe replacement work because of the snow that struck the UK so they picked up their shovels and set about helping the local community.

Staff and visitors were unable to access Barrock Court Care Home in Low Heskett due to the amount of snow that had fallen overnight, so NGN staff set to work clearing snow so that everyone could get in there safely.

Alan Shepherd, Maintenance Manager at Barrock Court Care Home, said: “We were really struggling to get on top of it until these guys showed up. It’s been a hard few day and Northern Gas Networks help has been very much appreciated. Thank you guys!”

The team also helped neighbours clear the snow from their properties and their hard work didn’t go unnoticed.

A resident via Facebook, said: “My 87-year-old neighbour went to hairdressers yesterday and two young lads from Northern Gas Networks were clearing the road. They ran up to the car, that was dropping her off, one carried her shopping bag and the other helped her to the door. It made her day, and mine.”

Matty McBride, Business Operational Leader for Northern Gas Networks, said: “The efforts from the team, based in Carlisle, has been fantastic and I’m proud of every one of them and the lengths that they have gone to.

“We pride ourselves on helping people, young and old, in the community and this is just some of the efforts we go to try and help the vulnerable.

“I’d also like to thank local residents for their kind comments. The current weather is proving very treacherous for everyone and it’s wonderful to see how people are rallying together and showing great community spirit.”

What do I do if I’m experiencing issues with my boiler?

Read

Please only call the national Gas Emergency Number 0800 111 999 if you have a gas emergency, can smell gas or you suspect you have a carbon monoxide issue.

Issues with your boiler

If you have an issue with your gas boiler or any other gas appliance please call a Gas Safe registered engineer or your gas supplier. The gas emergency number won’t be able to assist with boiler issues.

For a Gas Safe registered engineer in your area call 0800 408 5500 or visit: www.gassaferegister.co.uk/find-an-engineer

How to thaw a frozen condensate (boiler) pipe

To thaw frozen boiler pipes, hold a hot water bottle, or heat wrap, around the pipe. Alternatively, pour hot, not boiling, water over the frozen end of the pipe.

If the boiler fires up, it’s fixed. If it doesn’t then pour hot water on the pipe again. If your pipes are still frozen, call your supplier.

Are your radiators cold?

There could be a number of reasons that mean your radiators aren’t heating up properly. It’s not always a fault with your central heating system and carrying out a few basic checks first could help fix the problem in no time:

  • Is your thermostat too low? If no radiators are heating up check the thermostat in your room and on the boiler itself. Your manufacturer’s manual will provide details on the correct settings
  • Is the timer set correctly? We’ve all set a timer for our central heating to come on and then realised we forgot about 24-hour clock so check and make sure all the timings are correct
  • Is your boiler’s pilot light out? Your boiler’s manual should have instructions on relighting this but you should also find details on the back of the boiler’s front panel
How to deal with frozen pipes

If the freezing temperatures have got hold of your pipes, it’s important to defrost them as quickly as possible to help reduce the risk of them cracking or bursting. Follow these steps:

  • Find out where the blockage is. Feel along the pipe and if a section feels much colder than the rest, that’s probably where the blockage is
  • Use a hairdryer or hot water bottle to melt the frozen blockage. Never use a naked flame or pour boiling water on to the pipes

Pioneering UK gas project aims to reduce domestic CO2 emissions

Read

A pioneering green energy trial – the first of its kind in the UK – launched today could help cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions caused by heating homes.

Led by gas network Cadent, in partnership with Northern Gas Networks and a consortium of technical experts, the HyDeploy project is exploring the potential of injecting zero-carbon hydrogen into the natural gas network.

Backed by OFGEM’s Network Innovation Competition, HyDeploy aims to establish the potential for blending hydrogen, up to 20%, into the normal gas supply to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. It is working towards a one-year live trial on part of Keele University’s private gas network, starting in 2019.

It will determine the level of hydrogen which could be used by gas customers safely, and with no changes to their behaviour or existing domestic appliances.

This could ultimately inform a pathway towards a wider hydrogen network, supporting industry and transport as well as the domestic customer.

Many experts see hydrogen as an adaptable alternative to fossil fuels because when hydrogen is burned it doesn’t produce CO2, just water and heat.

Although ‘Town’ gas, used in the UK gas network until the 1970s, was made up of up to 60% hydrogen, HyDeploy will be the first time many of the customers at Keele University will have experienced using hydrogen for energy in their homes.

The Health & Safety Laboratory is overseeing all safety aspects of HyDeploy, providing expert, impartial advice to the project.

As part of Phase 1 of HyDeploy, gas safety checks are being carried out in the homes and buildings in the trial area.

Laboratory tests have also been carried out on a range of common household gas appliances as well as extensive research on the effects of hydrogen on the different materials found on the gas pipe network.

Keele has the largest university campus in the UK with 12,000 students and staff. With 350 mixed-use buildings, the campus provides domestic properties, university facilities and a science park, giving the campus a profile similar to the size of a small town.

The results of HyDeploy could provide a platform for a trial on a public network, and wider roll out.

David Parkin, Director of Safety & Network Strategy at Cadent, said: “Cadent are very excited to be leading the HyDeploy project which will be the first live trial of hydrogen in a modern UK gas network. HyDeploy will provide important practical evidence to help us understand how hydrogen could help to reduce carbon emissions from heat in a practical and affordable way for UK customers.”

Mark Horsley, CEO of Northern Gas Networks, said: “HyDeploy is a pioneering project taking place at an extremely exciting time for the UK’s energy industry as we work towards a cleaner and greener future.

“The UK gas network has a vital role to play in the decarbonisation of heat and transport, and HyDeploy is an important stepping stone to wider deployment of clean, cost-effective hydrogen that can keep our homes warm, fuel vehicles and power industry.”

Professor Mark Ormerod, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost at Keele University, said: “Energy and sustainability is a key overarching institutional priority for Keele University, and we are delighted to be a partner in this important, highly relevant and prestigious project. This collaborative project tackles one of the major societal challenges and has the potential to be highly impactful and lead to a significant reduction in carbon emissions”.

The launch of HyDeploy was supported by an event on 27th February, featuring a project overview, Q&A from a panel of the project team and a keynote speech from Sir Edward Davey MP on the current challenges the UK faces in reducing CO2 emissions.

Community groups come together to share knowledge

Read

Community groups, who have received support from Northern Gas Networks’ Community Promises Fund, came together last week as part of Fuel Poverty Awareness Day.

Events were held for them to share their knowledge and best practice on how they can educate local people about energy saving, fuel poverty and carbon monoxide awareness.

The community groups were brought together as part of NGN’s community Promises Fund, which is now in its second year. The fund offers grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 to third sector organisations and community groups with innovative approaches to delivering sustainable initiatives associated with Energy Saving, Fuel Poverty, Carbon Monoxide Awareness and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects across areas of the north of England served by NGN.

The events, held on Monday (19 February) at the St George’s Conference Centre in Leeds, and on Tuesday (20 February) at Seaham Town Hall, were supported by Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the north of England’s gas distributor, and Leeds Community Foundation (LCF).

After applying at the end of last year, the nine projects benefiting from the 2018 programme are:

  • Age UK, Gateshead
  • Citizen Advice, Newcastle
  • Community Voice FM Ltd, Cleveland
  • Hartlepower C.I.C., Hartlepool
  • Highfield Food Co-op, Keighley
  • National Energy Action
  • Stockton and District Advice Information Service (SDAIS)
  • The Canopy Housing Project, Leeds
  • Yorkshire Energy Doctor

Leeds Community Foundation (LCF), a charity dedicated to creating positive change in local communities, will distribute the grants.

Tom Bell, Head of Social Strategy at Northern Gas Networks, said: “Both of these workshops were a fantastic way for groups who have received funding, both past and present, to not only learn from each other and share knowledge, but also join-up and create partnership working that will fundamentally help residents in their local communities.

“Community groups, and local organisations, play a huge role in helping to identify and assist those who are in need and I’m very much looking forward to working with them on their exciting projects and their efforts to help make a difference to local people’s lives.”

Pip Goff, Grants and Programmes Director at Leeds Community Foundation, added: “The two workshops, in both Leeds and Seaham, were a wonderful opportunity for community groups to come together, provide help to one another and learn. We’re delighted to be working with NGN on this important scheme.”

Kath Harrison from DIAL (Disability Information Advice Line) in Leeds, who received funding last year, said: “The Community Promises Fund is not just a grant. It gives us the chance to meet with a vast network of organisations who have local connections with hard to reach communities.

“This connection allows us to share ideas and experiences, and most importantly, make a huge impact on the lives of vulnerable people.”

NGN will be sharing regular updates throughout 2018 via their website and social media channels, and showcasing some of the excellent work the nine projects will be carrying out.
