Update – £2.5m upgrade to Huddersfield gas distribution network

Read

Works have now concluded on the Bradley Mills Road and Barr Street junctions as part of the £2.5m upgrade to the ageing gas distribution network in and around Leeds Road and St Andrews Road, Huddersfield.

The four-way lights have now been restored to normal working operation and works are now progressing on to the outbound carriageway towards the Red Doles Lane junction (the contra-flow will remain in place until the works have past the junction).

The phase on St Andrews Road is also complete and works are now progressing onto Leeds Road, starting outside Top Tiles and heading eastbound. In order to complete these works a number of pedestrian crossing islands have been removed and pedestrians are reminded to use the existing crossing points where possible.

Following the works, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) will be working with Kirklees Council to replace the pedestrian crossings with new modern crossing islands upon completion.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the energy infrastructure in Huddersfield and will involve replacing around 3km of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The ageing pipes, some of which are nearly 100 years old, have required a number of repairs in recent years. Therefore, NGN has prioritised them for replacement this year to minimise any future inconvenience for residents and road users.

For further information about the project please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.

Northern Gas Networks supports Billingham Foodbank by donating food and IT equipment

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), supported Billingham Foodbank last month (October) by donating food and IT equipment.

NGN has been carrying out essential gas mains replacement work on Durham Lane to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The works were registered as a Considerate Constructors Scheme site, and as part of the scheme’s pledges, NGN’s Customer Care Team organised a foodbank collection in a bid to make a small difference to the lives of people living in the area.

Foodbank donation drop-off points were set up at NGN’s offices in Cannon Park in Middlesbrough, Temple Point in Leeds and onsite at Durham Lane. Staff from NGN and Stanningley Engineering Ltd, the gas distributor’s contractor for the Durham Lane project, collectively made a small donation to try and ease some of the hardships encountered by the people that rely on Billingham Foodbank.

NGN also donated a number of mobile phones and a number of desktop computers which will be used to facilitate the foodbank’s administration and communication processes.

Jackie Gibson, Customer Care Officer at Northern Gas Networks, said: “It’s great to be able to support Billingham Foodbank and make a difference for local people. The foodbank does more than just donate food; they support local people whatever their need and we were honoured to be able to support them with our donation.”

Alan Hopton from Stanningley Engineering and Customer Care Officer Jackie Gibson and Document Controller Stella Matthews from Northern Gas Networks

Billingham Foodbank is part of The Trussell Trust’s network of 428 foodbanks, working to tackle food poverty and hunger in local communities across the UK. Billingham Foodbank provided food to almost 6,000 people in crisis last year in the Billingham and Stockton-On-Tees areas.

Alan Coyle, from Billingham Foodbank, said: ‘’We would like to say a big thank you to Northern Gas Networks for their donation. This donation enables us to continue to be able to provide support to the people who need it the most.”

NGN stakeholders to shape future of energy innovation through ENA Gas Network Innovation Strategy consultation

Read

The Energy Networks Association today launched a consultation on its draft Gas Network Innovation Strategy, and Northern Gas Networks stakeholders have been invited to play a vital role in shaping the future of UK energy innovation.

The Gas Network Innovation Strategy sets out the challenges and the opportunities facing the gas transmission and distribution networks as the UK looks to decarbonise its energy system to meet climate change targets.

The Strategy sets out the role that our existing gas infrastructure can play in meeting demand for power, heat and transport in a low carbon economy. It seeks views from technology providers on how they would like to see gas network companies play a role in delivering greater energy innovation for the here and now, and into the future.

Stakeholder consultation around the Strategy forms a crucial part in its development. Gas network companies are seeking feedback on the content, structure and style of the Strategy and will discuss the draft at ENA’s Low Carbon Networks and Innovation conference in December.

Richard Hynes-Cooper, Head of Innovation at NGN said: “At NGN, we use innovation to improve business processes, our use of technology and security of supply, passing on cost benefits to our customers and minimising our impact on the environment.

“Stakeholders have a key role to play in helping gas networks identify the challenges and knowledge gaps where innovation can provide solutions, making this Strategy consultation a really important opportunity to help networks deliver even greater results.”

David Smith, CEO of ENA said: “Continued innovation across our gas and electricity networks is vital to building on the success already seen in this part of our energy sector. These strategies are not only about encouraging network companies to bring forward innovative projects and embed a culture of innovation within their organisations but also about giving stakeholders the chance to help shape that process.”

To view the Strategy in full click here.

The draft will also be discussed via two workshops at the ENA’s Low Carbon Networks and Innovation conference on December 6-7.

Carbon Monoxide initiative shortlisted for the Health and Safety Initiative of the Year award at the Utility Week Awards

Read

A joint initiative by the four gas distribution networks (GDNs) has been shortlisted in the Health and Safety Initiative of the Year category at this year’s Utility Week Awards.

Originally developed by CO-Gas Safety, with the help of Carbon Monoxide (CO) victims, as a poster competition aimed at primary school children, the health and safety initiative was designed to raise awareness through creative engagement with key safety messages to help better understand the dangers, recognise the symptoms and take or encourage actions from parents and carers to avoid risks from CO.

The four GDNs, Northern Gas Networks, SGN, Wales & West Utilities and Cadent, recognised the impact that this work could have and in 2015, agreed with CO-Gas Safety to take over the overall management and also extended applications to include additional media, written, moving image and drama.

The competition went from receiving around 100 applications to approximately 1,000 in 2016 and included posters, journals, poems and videos. Each GDN selects two regional winners from two age groups, these regional winners are recognised locally and are then invited to attend the national awards ceremony, in the House of Commons, where the two national winners are announced.

Tom Bell, Head of Social Strategy at Northern Gas Networks, said: “Whilst too high, the number of deaths from CO is falling, in part down to improvements in manufacturing and technology, but also aided by awareness campaigns such as the CO competition. The quality and creativeness demonstrated in the entries has allowed difficult messages to be better understood by children and adults alike.

“We are delighted to hear that the initiative has been shortlisted at the Utility Week Awards and I look forward to Monday 11 December when the winners are announced.”

The four GDNs, and CO-Gas Safety, have been shortlisted against Affinity Water, eight2O, Lightsout Computer Services with Laing O’Rourke and Severn Trent Water, Severn Trent Water and MWH Treatment, and Wessex Water. Winners of all 11 award categories will be announced at the Utility Week Awards ceremony at the Grosvenor Hotel in Mayfair, London on Monday 11 December.

NGN has also been shortlisted in the Community Initiative of the Year category for their Warm Hubs initiative, a pioneering community project that aims to help residents facing the misery of fuel poverty, isolation and loneliness. The hubs provide warm, friendly places, staffed by volunteers, where vulnerable residents can go to socialise, get warm, have a hot meal and access information, advice and referrals to relevant support. More information is available on the NGN website.

The Utility Week Awards recognise excellence across the industry and reward organisations that have achieved outstanding performance in the last year. The 11 award categories are open to any company involved in the utilities sector – companies producing, distributing and retailing energy or water.

Northern Gas Networks shortlisted for the Community Initiative of the Year award at the Utility Week Awards

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), has been shortlisted in the Community Initiative of the Year category at this year’s Utility Week Awards for its programme to combat fuel poverty.

NGN has been shortlisted for their Warm Hubs initiative, a pioneering community project, in partnership with Community Action Northumberland, that aims to help residents facing the misery of fuel poverty, isolation and loneliness.

The hubs provide warm, friendly places, staffed by volunteers, where customers living in vulnerable situations, usually in areas that aren’t connected to the gas network, can go to socialise, get warm, have a hot meal and access information, advice and referrals to relevant support.

20 Warm Hubs are now thriving in Northumberland and more than 1,000 residents attend each week during the winter months. The self-sustaining scheme has also attracted around £750,000 in funding from external sources and 200 volunteers have been trained to support.

Tom Bell, Head of Social Strategy, Northern Gas Networks, said: “Fuel poverty is a problem throughout our region so we launched our Warm Hubs scheme to reach out to those residents who are living in uncomfortable conditions and struggling to keep warm.

“We are honoured to hear that the scheme has been shortlisted at the Utility Week Awards and look forward to Monday 11 December when the winners are announced.”

NGN has recently launched a new Warm Hub at St Paul’s Centre in Newcastle – the first time the concept has been tried in an urban environment, and has a further seven hubs planned for the city.

Christine Nicholls, Community Development Officer for Community Action Northumberland, said: “Warm Hubs provide friendly, cosy places where local people can go to socialise, stay warm and get a hot meal. They are a simple and effective way of bringing people together who otherwise may become isolated and lonely, and struggling with heating their homes.  We’re delighted that the scheme has been recognised by Utility Week.”

NGN has been shortlisted against Bulb, Southern Water, SP Energy Networks and UK Power Networks. Winners of all 11 award categories will be announced at the Utility Week Awards ceremony at the Grosvenor Hotel in Mayfair, London on Monday 11 December.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and involves replacing 300m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which is due for completion by Tuesday 31 October, has been planned to coincide with power distribution network Electricity North West’s essential investment in Maryports power network, in order to minimise the disruption caused.

In order to carry out the work quickly and safely it has been necessary to install temporary traffic lights on a section of Netherhall Road known locally as Netherhall corner to Netherhall school. The lights are manually operated from 7.30am to 6.00pm every day to help ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

Engineers will be working over the weekend in order to complete the work as quickly as possible.

Andrew Wright, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We know that no one likes roadworks and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused during these works. We’d like to thank our customers for their patience while we work to complete the upgrade as quickly as possible.”

Update – £2.5m upgrade to Huddersfield gas distribution network

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £2.5m to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around Leeds Road and St Andrews Road, Huddersfield.

The work on Leeds Road began in May and is due for completion in June 2018, having been planned in conjunction with Kirklees Council to take place in phases which will ensure the scheme is completed with as little disruption as possible.

The first phase of Leeds Road is now complete and engineers have begun the second phase, on the opposite site of the road, extending from Barr Street along the outbound carriageway of Leeds Road.

From Sunday (22 October), four-way temporary traffic signals will be introduced on Leeds Road at the junction of Bradley Mills Road and Barr Street for approximately one-week. Traffic signals will be manually operated between 7am and 8pm to help manage traffic flow.

Josh Hampshire, Construction Services Area Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We’ve carefully planned this essential work so that phase two of the project on Leeds Road coincides with the school half term holidays and Huddersfield Town playing away from home. Unfortunately we do expect long delays and are asking members of public to leave more time to travel and find an alternative route where possible.”

Once this section of work is complete the project will progress to the outbound carriageway of Leeds Road and a contra-flow system will be in place for approximately five-weeks to safely guide all traffic through the works.

Josh continued: “We have been working closely with Kirklees Council to carefully plan this project to coincide with their resurfacing scheme which is due to take place on Leeds Road next year, and minimise any disruption to customers.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and thank our customers for their patience and support while we work to complete the project as quickly as possible.”

The works on St Andrews Road, which began in May, are now approaching the final stages and are due for completion at the end of the month (October 2017).

Essential gas main diversion works start next Monday (23 October) on Main Street, Fulford

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), will begin works to lay a new gas main on Main Street, Fulford next Monday (23 October).

The project has been planned in conjunction with City of York Council and will involve extending the existing gas network to supply a new housing estate nearby.

The four-week scheme, beginning on Monday 23 October and scheduled to be completed on Friday 24 November, will be carried out in two phases with temporary traffic lights in place on Main Street for the first two-weeks (Phase 1).

It’s expected that the first phase of the work may cause some delays to journey times, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel whilst the temporary traffic signals are in place. Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers will be door-knocking local homes and businesses to make customers aware of the project, while on-site signage will advise motorists of the work taking place.

Robert Hope, Construction Services Area Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have worked closely with the City of York Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We will endeavour to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible and will keep customers updated as the work progresses. I’d like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused during these works and thank everyone for their patience and support while we carry out these essential works.”
