Emergency engineers from Northern Gas Networks (NGN) attended the scene of an incident on Rosslyn Avenue in Ryhope, Sunderland on the morning of Friday 11 August.

We have been working alongside the emergency services, and investigations into the cause of the incident continues.

Essential upgrade to gas mains on Howden Bank, Stanley

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is upgrading the ageing metal gas distribution network on Howden Bank (A6076), Stanley.

The essential project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the area and will involve replacing 250m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The four-week project is due to start on Monday 14 August and has been carefully planned in conjunction with the local authority.

In order to carry out the works safely and efficiently there will be two-way traffic lights in place from Fenhall Lodge to Ornsby Hill House for the duration of the works. Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual.

It is expected these works may cause some delays to journey times, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel. NGN will endeavour to complete the works as soon as possible, and will provide updates on progress throughout the project.

NGN’s Customer Care officers have been door knocking local homes and businesses to make customers aware of the work and we will also be using on-site signage to advise road users of the scheme.

£100k upgrade to Dewsbury gas distribution network

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £100k to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around Halifax Road, Dewsbury.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in Dewsbury and will involve replacing 650m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which began on Monday (7 August) and is scheduled for completion on Friday 1 September, has been planned in conjunction with Kirklees Council to ensure all works are completed during the school holidays in order to cause as little disruption as possible.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to introduce three-way temporary traffic signals on Halifax Road at the junction of Beckett Road and Birkdale until Sunday 20 August. The lights will then be moved onto Healds Road at the junction of Halifax Road and Wheelwright Drive for the remainder of the project.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and access will remain for all residents and businesses.

£85k upgrade to Bradford gas distribution network

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £85k to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around Great Horton Road, Bradford.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in Bradford and will involve replacing almost 300m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which began on Monday 24 July and is scheduled for completion on Friday 1 September, has been planned in conjunction with Bradford City Council to ensure all works are completed during the school holidays in order to cause as little disruption as possible.

Works began on Great Horton Road at the junction of Moore Avenue, and will progress to Old Road, Hollybank Road and Pickles Lane.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to introduce four-way temporary traffic signals at the junction of Hollybank Road and Moor Avenue for the full duration of the project. There will also be road closures in place on Pickles Lane and Old Road with signed diversion routes in place for all motorists.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times with engineers will be working Monday to Sunday between 8.30am and 6.30pm whilst working on Great Horton Road, then Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm for the rest of the project. Access will remain for all residents and businesses.

£28k investment to gas distribution network in North Bailey, Durham

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing over £28k to upgrade the ageing gas mains in North Bailey, Durham.

The essential project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing more than 200m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Durham for years to come.

The ageing gas mains have required several repairs in recent years and, as a result, NGN have prioritised the pipe for replacement this year in order to minimise any future inconvenience.

The four-week project, which is due to start on Monday 9 October, has been carefully planned in conjunction with Durham County Council.

In order to carry out these works safely and efficiently, they will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to local businesses and residents. The works will start at the junction of Bow Lane and North Bailey and finish at the junction of Owengate.

Due to the position of the gas main, a road closure from Monday to Friday, between 9am and 3pm, will be necessary, however the road will be open outside of these times.

Shops and business in the area will remain open as usual throughout the duration of the project.

NGN will be holding two customer information meetings at Alington House Community Association, 4 North Bailey, Durham, DH1 3ET at 5pm and 6pm on Monday 4 September, where customers can come along to find out more about the works and ask any questions they may have.

The first information session will start at 5pm prompt where there will be a brief presentation and overview of the works followed by an opportunity for customers to ask any questions. The second session at 6pm will follow the same format.

NGN’s Customer Care officers will be door knocking local homes and businesses to make customers aware of the work, while on-site signage will advise motorists of the work happening in the area.

Northern Gas Networks receives prestigious RoSPA award

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the North of England’s gas distributer, has received a gold award at the annual RoSPA awards.

The prestigious annual health and safety awards are run by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and are internationally recognised as the most sought-after accolade in the health and safety industry by organisations from every sector.

The awards have become the key fixture in the health and safety calendar and offer organisations a prime opportunity to prove their ongoing commitment to raising health and safety standards.

NGN received a gold award in the non-competitive achievement category based on their occupational health and safety performance assessed against the judging criteria.

The judges, consisting of highly experienced health and safety professionals, looked at NGN’s overarching occupational health and safety management systems and records against key indicators over the last five years, including practices such as leadership, workforce involvement, key achievements and incidents.

Mark Horsley, Chief Executive Officer at Northern Gas Networks, said: “I am delighted for all NGN colleagues for achieving this prestigious award, which is independent recognition of everyone’s positive attitude to health and safety.

Northern Gas Networks helps Sunderland primary school with donation to promote positive and constructive play

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), has donated signs and barriers to Town End Academy Primary School in Sunderland for their ‘Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) Primary Programme’.

NGN distributes gas to customers throughout the North of England including Sunderland and Durham, where the company’s 150-strong customer contact centre is based.

OPAL is a mentor supported programme to deliver sustainable and safe play which is supported by Ofsted.

The barriers and signs were donated so that a construction area could be created in the school making play more fun and constructive.

NGN made the donation after staff were informed about NGN’s work with schools.

Alex Brightman, Customer Care Officer said: “It’s great to be able to support children’s learning about recognising roadworks and staying safe and to help promote fun and positive play with our donation of barriers and signs.”

Teacher Aisha Smith said: “The donation is very gratefully received and we thank Northern Gas Networks. It is great that they are willing to support local schools in the community. The barriers and signage will ensure that the children continue to have a positive and constructive playtime.”

£75,000 upgrade to gas network at Victor Street, York

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing around £75,000 to upgrade ageing gas mains in Victor Street, York.

This essential project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing over 200m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in York for years to come.

The five-week project, which is scheduled to start on Monday 11 September, has been carefully planned in conjunction with City of York Council.

Due to the location of the gas main and in order to carry out the works safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to temporarily close sections of Victor Street during the course of the project.

Temporary road closures will be in place as follows:

  • Monday 11 September 2017 (approximately one-week) – Junction of Kyme Street to the junction of Cromwell Road
  • Monday 18 September 2017 (approximately one-week) – Junction of Kyme Street to Newton Terrace
  • Final phase of works – Junction of Newton Terrace to Nunnery Lane

Parking on Victor Street will be suspended throughout the project.  Access will be maintained for residents during this time and there will be a signed diversion route in place for road users.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual.

This essential project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing over 30m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the York area for years to come.

The three-week project, which is due to start on Tuesday 29 August, has been carefully planned in conjunction with City of York Council.

In order to carry out works safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to implement various temporary traffic management measures, which will be in place for the duration of the project.

From Tuesday 29 August there will be a road closure in place from the junction of Thief Lane up to the Hull Road (A1079) junction. A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists and access for residents and pedestrians will be maintained at all times.

In addition, we will also be implementing three way traffic lights at the junction of University Road and Thief Lane.

Parking will be restricted on Thief Lane throughout the project.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door-knocking local homes and businesses to make customers aware of the work, while on-site signage will advise motorists of the scheme.

Engineers will be working Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm.

This essential project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing over 65m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in York for years to come.

The three-week project, which is due to start on Monday 14 August 2017, has been carefully planned in conjunction with City of York Council.

Due to the location of the gas main and in order to carry out the works safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to close one lane on the east bound slip road on the A64, Askham Bryan. The lane closure will be in place for approximately three weeks.  A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists.

It’s expected these works may cause extended journey times, so customers are advised to allow extra travel time whilst the lane closure is in place.  Engineers from NGN will be working hard to complete these works as soon as possible, and will provide updates on progress throughout the project.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual.
