£785k upgrade to Leeds gas distribution network

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £785k to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around Fairburn Drive at Garforth, Leeds.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in Leeds and will involve replacing 9km of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which began on Monday 8 May and is scheduled for completion in February 2018, has been planned in conjunction with Leeds City Council to ensure all works are completed with as little disruption as possible.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to introduce three-way temporary traffic signals on Ninelands Lane and Hazlewood Avenue for three weeks as of Monday 24 July. These lights will be manually operated during peak times in order to reduce queues as much as possible.

Due to Hazlewood Avenue being a bus route, there are expected to be some delays to bus services which we have advised the bus operators.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times with engineers working Monday to Saturday between 8am and 5pm.

Russ Oxley, Construction Services Area Manager Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have been working closely with Leeds City Council to carefully plan these works in order to minimise any disruption to customers.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting them completed as quickly as possible.”

For further information about the project please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.

Northern Gas Networks says goodbye to Redheugh gas holders by sharing residents’ memories

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing over £1.3million to safely dismantle and remove its gas holder tanks in Redheugh, Gateshead.

The major project, which will begin on Monday 24 July will take around 38 weeks to complete and will be carried out in conjunction with specialist partner, KDC.

NGN is encouraging people to share their memories of the Redheugh gas holders through its ‘Gas Holder Memories’ campaign by emailing: gasholdermemories@northerngas.co.uk, using #gasholdermemories on social media or in writing to: Northern Gas Networks, 1st Floor, 1 Emperor Way, Doxford International Business Park, Sunderland, SR3 3XR.

For around 100 years gas holders were a vital part of the local gas supply system, responsible for supplying gas to thousands of people across the country. In more recent years the gas holders have been used to bolster the network’s gas supplies during colder weather, and at peak times in the early evenings. However, advances in technology and the enhanced capability of the modern-day gas network, mean that gas holders are no longer in use.

NGN is committed to taking down its gas holders in an environmentally responsible way, by recycling as many materials as possible. The company will be using recycling all materials taken away from the site.

Mark Johnson, Project Manager from NGN’s Major Projects Team said: “The decision has been made to dismantle the three gas holders at Redheugh as they are no longer in use and they are costly to maintain. We’ll be working with a specialist contractor to carry out the work in a safe and environmentally responsible way.

“We know how important these structures can be to communities and we’ll be working closely with local residents and stakeholders to give them the opportunity to commemorate the structure as it disappears from the skyline through hosting art workshops in schools in conjunction with our local community artist.”

NGN is aiming to remove 23 of the region’s gas holders by 2021 as part of continued investment in modernising the gas network.

NGN has been carrying out essential work in the area to upgrade ageing metal pipes with more durable plastic ones.

The work started on Monday 17 April and is expected to last around 43 weeks with 8km of pipes being replaced as part of the £600,000 project.

Barwick in Elmet C of E Primary School, Leeds, presented with £1,000 by NGN.

The works were registered as a Considerate Constructor Scheme site, and as part of the Scheme’s pledges, NGN’s Customer Care team visited local schools and charities to explore ways of making a difference to the lives of people living where engineers are working.

The school has been raising money by holding ‘Run to Read’ events which engage both children and adults and include the Leeds Mini – a 1.5k race for 3 – 8 year olds, a 2.5k junior run for 9-14 year olds as well as the 10K Jane Tomlinson’s Run for All.

Northern Gas Networks gives NEA employees the chance to become Dementia Friends in dementia awareness session

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) delivered a dementia awareness session last week (5 July) to National Energy Action (NEA) employees to raise awareness of the disease and support the Alzheimer’s Society initiative to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about dementia.

The session was delivered by Sunderland based Liz Reynolds and Jill Walker of Northern Gas Networks, to twenty-four employees at the NEA’s Newcastle offices, the national charity seeking to end fuel poverty.

The training was delivered over two sessions, giving employees the chance to become Dementia Friends and helping them to learn about the disease and identify those that may be living with the condition and ensure that they provide the appropriate help and support.

Tom Bell, NGN’s Head of Social Strategy said: ‘’We work closely with the NEA and it is good to make more people dementia aware, dispelling the most common myths about the disease.’’

“Dementia is a disease which is likely to impact us all in some way, many of us have personal experience of seeing relatives or close friends living with it, or are directly supporting a family member who has dementia.

“We don’t underestimate the complexity of vulnerability at NGN and we know there is always so much more that can be done. That’s why we continually look to better understand the diverse challenges faced by the communities that we serve and adapt our approach to provide the most effective support possible.”

Jen Carruthers Jones, Business and Partnerships Manager at NEA, said: “The Dementia Friends sessions delivered by NGN were invaluable. The sessions not only helped us learn about what it’s like to live with dementia, but also how to turn that understanding into action. It was useful to learn about the small ways that you can help, from telling friends about it to visiting someone you know with dementia.”

As part of Dementia Awareness Week, which ran from 14 to 20 May, NGN gave colleagues the opportunity to become Dementia Friends across the network.

* A Dementia Friend, an Alzheimer’s Society initiative, learns a little bit more about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action – anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. From telling friends about Dementia Friends to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.

Northern Gas Networks makes a splash with £2,000 donation to wildlife learning project at Tadcaster East Community Primary School

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is supporting Tadcaster East Community Primary School with a £2,000 contribution towards an ambitious on-site wildlife project.

NGN is currently carrying out an essential upgrade to Tadcaster’s gas infrastructure, replacing ageing metal pipes with new, more durable plastic ones.

The £180,000 project, which began on York Road last month, involves replacing 2.5km of pipes. Lee Crowley is the site manager for the project and is fully supportive of the donation from NGN.

The scheme is registered as a Considerate Constructor Scheme site, and as part of the Scheme’s pledges, NGN’s Customer Care team visit local schools and charities to explore ways of making a difference to the lives of people living where engineers are working.

Customer Care Officer Hannah Thompson visited the primary school to hear more about how NGN could help support them, and discovered they needed a pond cover to protect wildlife and keep children safe when the pond isn’t being used for learning.

The Pond And Beyond is a wildlife and tree planting project which has been created to give Tadcaster East pupils the opportunity to learn more about nature and enjoy the great outdoors, whilst encouraging plenty of interesting species to the area.

Ruth Griffin, Administrator for Tadcaster East Community Primary School said: ‘’Ponds attract an enormous range of living creatures such as dragonflies, frogs and newts. A pond provides a wealth of interest to children and highlights the circle of life.  We intend to use the pond for pond dipping to enrich the children’s learning experience and to get them into the great outdoors.

“A cover will help protect the wildlife and keep pupils safe, so the donation from NGN is brilliant news.”

Lee Cowley, Site Manager at Northern Gas Networks said: ‘’We’re delighted to be able to support Tadcaster East Community School by donating £2,000 for a pond cover to keep children and wildlife safe.’’

£100,000 investment to gas distribution network at Market Place, Morpeth

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing over £100,000 to upgrade the ageing gas mains in Market Place, Morpeth.

The essential project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing over 500m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Morpeth for years to come.

The seven-week project, which is due to start on Monday 31 July 2017, has been carefully planned in conjunction with Northumberland County Council.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently, the project will be carried out in three phases.  During Phase One a single lane closure will be in place on Bridge Street for approximately five weeks from 31 July.  Works will progress from St George’s URC Church towards Morpeth Town Hall.

Road users will still be able to access Bridge Street from the A192 via a one way system and traffic will be able to access Bridge Street towards Morpeth Clock Tower, but will not be able to proceed down Bridge Street. A signed diversion route via Newgate Street will be in place and access for residents and pedestrians will be maintained at all times.

Phase Two of the works is scheduled to begin on 4 September and take one week.  Work will begin outside Morpeth Town Hall and continuing past the Clock Tower up to the road crossing opposite the Tower Buildings.  To minimise disruption the team will be working through the night, with temporary four way traffic lights in place to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.  The traffic lights will be removed by 5am each morning.

Phase Three of the works is scheduled to begin on 8 September for one week and will take place from Tower Buildings to Oldgate Bridge.  No traffic management will be necessary during the final phase of the work.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual throughout the project.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door-knocking local homes and businesses to make customers aware of the work, while on-site signage will advise motorists of the work happening in the area.

NGN recently held a community drop in session in the area where customers were invited to find out more about the project and meet the team.  The session was well attended and provided an opportunity for customers to ask questions and share their views.

During the project, NGN’s customer care officers will be working with representatives from the local town to help support the upcoming Morpeth Food and Drink Festival taking place on 7 & 8 October.  NGN have agreed to be the ‘Park and Ride’ sponsor and will be working hard to help promote this fantastic community event.

Richie Manuel, Construction Services Area Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “At NGN we fully appreciate the impact our works can have on customers, and would like to thank the local businesses and residents for their patience and understanding.

“We have worked closely with Northumberland County Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers. We will endeavour to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible and keep customers updated as the work progresses.

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused during these works and thank everyone for their patience and support while we carry out this essential upgrade.”

The Market Place, Morpeth project will be registered as a Considerate Constructors Scheme site, following key principles to ensure minimal impact on the environment, customers and the community and observing the highest standards of safety.

Yorkshire pupils scoop award for highlighting dangers of silent killer

Read

Two pupils from Yorkshire schools; St Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy in Horsforth and Moorlands Primary School in Huddersfield, have won the regional heats for their area as part of the national carbon monoxide safety competition.

Amy Doughty, age 6, from St Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy in Horsforth won the Key Stage 1 category with her creative poster calling for people to arm themselves with a carbon monoxide alarm.  Meanwhile, Moorlands Primary school pupil Megan Bell, aged 10, was the Key Stage 2 area winner with her poem highlighting the dangers of the silent killer.

GDNs with Tom Bell, Head of Social Strategy at Northern Gas Networks (far right) with Yorkshire winners from left Amy Doughty and Megan Bell.

The awards ceremony, which is now in its tenth year and aims to raise awareness of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and took place at the Palace of Westminster on Thursday 29 June.

The competition was launched in January by the North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), Cadent, SGN and Wales & West Utilities, the companies which are responsible for running the gas networks across Great Britain.

The competition received entries from nearly 1,000 young people, ranging from videos, posters, websites, and poems warning of the dangers of the deadly gas.

Regional winners were awarded £150 and entered into the national competition, with schools and other supporting organisations receiving an additional £300 in prize money.

The winners and their guests were given a tour of the House of Commons in the Palace of Westminster before the winners received their prizes at a special ceremony hosted by Barry Sheerman, MP, who co-chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG), in Portcullis House.

Tom Bell, Head of Social Strategy, Northern Gas Networks, said:

“Since April 2016, Northern Gas Networks has condemned over 1,000 unsafe gas appliances in Yorkshire alone as a result of carbon monoxide related issues.

“This could be avoided if awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide were better known and people took some simple precautions such as getting their gas appliances checked each year by a Gas Safe registered engineer and having a carbon monoxide alarm.”

He added: “I’m delighted that we had so many great entries for this year’s competition and feel really proud of our Yorkshire winners, Amy and Megan. It’s been a fun way to both passed the carbon monoxide safety message onto the younger generation and to highlight awareness among all ages.”

First launched in 2007, the competition was founded and run for many years by charity CO-Gas Safety www.co-gassafety.co.uk in partnership with the GDNs, but this year the GDNs have taken over the running of the competition.

The national carbon monoxide competition is returning later this year, and is open for entries from September 2017.  To find out more visit http://www.energynetworks.org/.
