Northern Gas Networks to begin final phases of gas mains replacement project in the New Year

Read

Work will start again in the New Year on the final phases of a major project to replace ageing metal gas mains in York city centre.

The project which commenced in June will see a total of 1.2km of metallic pipe replaced with more durable plastic pipes that will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in York for years to come.

Engineers from Northern Gas Networks completed the fifth phase of the £750,000 project ahead of schedule in October, enabling them to move offsite and avoid disruption to residents, motorists and business owners during the busy Christmas trading period.

Work will recommence in Goodramgate and St Maurice’s Road from Monday 6 January 2014 and is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.

The final phase of the work will be carried out in Lawrence Street in the Spring, and this will take approximately four weeks to complete.

Garry Farnhill, Customer Operations Area Manager said: “Every stage of our work has been carried out in close consultation with City of York Council, and we have taken every precaution possible to minimise disruption to residents, tourists, motorists and business owners.

Our highly skilled engineers will be working from 7am to 7pm to minimise the time we will be working in the area. However, in order to maintain access to busy streets during the day, it will be necessary to carry out some overnight work on Goodramgate.  We hope to complete these works over three nights, and will finish work by 11pm.

Due to the nature of our work, it will be necessary for lane closures to be put in place on St Maurice Road on 20 January and for temporary traffic lights to be installed.

Access for deliveries will be maintained throughout the work however parking for Blue Badge holders will be suspended on Goodramgate and Colliergate.

Mr Farnhill added “We would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause.”

We will continue to keep our customers informed by holding a community forum on

7 January between 17:00 and 18:00 at The Black Swan Inn, Peasholme Green, YO1 7PR, providing an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions or raise any concerns.

Northern Gas Networks will also be re-opening its customer cabin on Deangate in the city centre in the New Year. Members of the public are invited to drop in to get the latest information about the work and representatives from Northern Gas Networks will be available to answer any questions that they may have.

The cabin will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11.00am to 1.00pm and on Tuesday evenings from 5.00pm to 7.00pm.

Children from Percy Hedley Foundation draw experience from Northern Gas Networks

Read

Workers at Northern Gas Network’s (NGN) Customer Contact Centre in Doxford Park, Sunderland, have partnered with the Percy Hedley Foundation’s Employability Project to help inspire a group of disabled children to express their artistic flair and learn more about the gas industry.

As the region’s leading disability charity the Percy Hedley Foundation provides a wide range of services to disabled children, young people and adults and their families.  The Employability Project works across the region to develop employability opportunities for disabled people and break down the barriers that employers envisage exist to employing disabled people.

Northern Gas Networks team leader, Jade Wardle from Castletown, Sunderland visited the Foundation and explained how gas is delivered to homes all across the region. The children were also shown various pieces of equipment and were able to try on specialist safety clothing used by the company’s engineers.

The visit also helped to solve the problem of what to put on the freshly painted wall within the company’s newly refurbished training room.

Jade said: “We were looking for inspiration for our new training facility.  Our visit to the school revealed that the children particularly liked art and painting so we’ve decorated our new training room with a huge mural that the children helped us to paint.”

The company’s artist in residence, Mick Hand, designed the 8ft long ‘paint by numbers’ mural which shows various aspects of Northern Gas Network’s work including excavations, gas holders and company vehicles. 15 children helped to complete the painting over three days.

Christine Shanks, the Foundation’s Employability Project Manager was delighted with both the mural and the opportunities Northern Gas Networks is giving to disabled people.  She commented:

“I feel that this is the start of a great relationship, both organisations have lots to offer one another.  We are already talking about work placements and possible apprenticeship placements that will give fantastic opportunities to those students who may not always get chance to benefit from experiences such as this.

“I can speak for the whole Foundation and say a big thank you as we have all thoroughly enjoyed our time with Northern Gas Networks and are proud that our artwork will be on display for many years to come.”

Ongoing essential work at Armley Gyratory

Read

Richard Hynes Cooper, Customer Operations Area Manager, Northern Gas Networks, said:

“We’re making good progress repairing the gas main in the Armley Gyratory area. We are currently working on the roundabout leaving two lanes open to traffic.

“The nature of the work means that we will have to move our excavations from our current position to another lane later tonight when traffic management will be put into place. We intend to excavate again from 6am Tuesday 3 December. This will still leave two lanes free for traffic to negotiate.

“Once again, I’d like to thank the public for their cooperation and understanding and I’d also like to let everyone know that the A643 dual carriageway remains fully operational.”
