Education and training

We’re committed to developing young people’s skills, to improve their employment prospects and to help make our region more prosperous.

Working with a range of trusted partners, we aim to support and inspire up to 20,000 young and vulnerable people each year, from primary school children to young job seekers.

Our focus is on under-represented STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects, as we are passionate about nurturing the engineers of the future.

For younger age groups, we also work with partner organisations to promote key safety messages, such as the dangers of playing near work sites.

Community Promises

For younger age groups, we also work with partner organisations to promote key safety messages.

You can read more about our commitment to using our knowledge, energy and manpower to benefit our communities in our Community Promises.

Case studies

We have some exciting projects on the go to help to keep the region cooking on gas and ensure that every penny that we spend delivers maximum value to our customers.

Independent living support for teenagers

We’ve been working with the Children’s Society for several years. In 2017, we worked with the charity to launch a development programme for teenagers in Newcastle.

The six-week development programme helps teens who are thinking of living independently for the first time. It covers essential life skills such as bills and budgeting.

More than 900 teenagers have been engaged through the programme since September 2017.

The art of the community

Not many companies can boast their own community artist.

We have one, however, and his name is Mick Hand. A talented and engaging professional artist from Wakefield, Mick delivers workshops for young people in areas close to our work sites.

To date, he’s delivered more than xxx hours of workshops in local schools. These engaging sessions help children to understand the role of NGN and the dangers of playing near roadworks.

Safety posters designed by the children are used on customer letters, site signage and even van liveries.

Educating and inspiring our young people

Working with specialist partners, we’re engaging thousands of young people, from primary school students to school leavers.

Our partnership with Hull Children’s University provides educational trips, mentoring and work placement opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

We run a range of safety outreach programmes for younger students, focused around CO safety and not playing near construction sites.

And our Young Presenter of the Year competition gives students aged 12-17 the chance to improve their presentation skills and confidence, while learning more about the gas industry.
