Essential upgrade to gas distribution network on Brentfield Way, Penrith

Read

From Monday 9 April, the North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), will start work on upgrading the ageing gas distribution network on Brentfield Way, Penrith.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing approximately 4.5km of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones. This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The ageing metal gas main has required several repairs in recent years so NGN has prioritised the pipe for replacement to minimise any future inconvenience caused.

The fourteen-week project has been carefully planned in conjunction with Eden District Council and NGN will aim to complete the work as safely and efficiently as possible.

In order to carry out the works, it will be necessary to implement a road closure for approximately three weeks on Hallin Crescent. A signed diversion route will be in place for road users.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual.

NGN will be holding a community drop-in meeting at the Haydock Community Centre, St Catherine’s Church, 26 Drovers Lane, Penrith, CA11 9EL on Tuesday 3 April, for customers to find out more about the works and ask any questions they may have.

Matty McBride, Business Operational Leader for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have been working closely with Eden District Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience customers may encounter, and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”

The project is registered as a Considerate Constructors Site (CCS) – the key principles are to ensure minimal impact to the environment, customers and the community and the highest standards of safety. Anyone wishing to find out more about CCS can visit: www.ccscheme.org.uk.

Budding young artists, poets and designers wanted to target the silent killer

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the North of England’s gas distributor, is calling on budding young artists, poets and designers to use their talents and target the silent killer, carbon monoxide.

NGN are looking for creative kids to design a poster, poem or film to raise awareness of the poisonous gas carbon monoxide (CO), often known as the ‘silent killer’ as it cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted, making it difficult to detect.

The annual competition is open to children aged 5 to 11-years-old and there are some great prizes up for grabs for the winning pupil and their school or organisation (such as Cubs or Brownies).

First launched in 2007 the competition was previously run by charity CO-Gas Safety in partnership with the gas distribution network (GDN) companies but this year the GDNs, including NGN, have taken over the running of the competition.

Regional winners will go through to the final that will be judged at a presentation at the Palace of Westminster. Entrants stand a chance of winning the following prizes:

  • Regional winner: £150 each and £300 for their school/organisation
  • National winner: £300 for themselves and £600 for their school/organisation

Entries can be emailed to: tbell@northerngas.co.uk (closing date Friday 11 May)

Tom Bell, Head of Social Strategy at Northern Gas Networks, said: “We take the safety of customers very seriously, so it’s a pleasure to be involved in spreading such a vitally important message about the danger of CO.

“This toxic gas can be deadly, so engaging children through art is a great way to raise awareness and hopefully educate their families too. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to have some fun, exercise their creative talents and have a chance of winning some great prizes while relaying an important safety message.”

For more information about the competition, or to see the terms and conditions, please visit: www.energynetworks.org/gas/she/co-safety-competition.html

CO is produced by the incomplete burning of fossil fuels and can be emitted by faulty boilers or gas appliances. Symptoms of CO poisoning include dizziness, nausea and shortness of breath, with around 50 UK deaths recorded every year.

Essential upgrade to gas mains in Berwick-upon-Tweed

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), have this week (19 March) started the final phase to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network on Castlegate and Marygate in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing the existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones. This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project has been planned in conjunction with Berwick-upon-Tweed Town Council and Northumberland County Council to ensure the work is completed as quickly and safely as possible.

Due to the location of the gas main it has been necessary to introduce three-way temporary traffic lights at the junction of Marygate and Walkergate for approximately four weeks, meaning the works should be completed by Monday 9 April. However, between Friday 30 March and Monday 2 April the road will open as normal to allow for the Easter weekend, work will then continue on Tuesday 3 April until the end of the project.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual throughout the project.

Richie Manuel, Business Operational Leader for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have been working closely with Berwick-upon-Tweed Town Council and Northumberland County Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused, and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”

Northern Gas Networks’ officers become CCS heroes

Read

Three members of staff from Northern Gas Networks, the North of England’s gas distributor, have become Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) heroes.

The scheme recognises and rewards people who consistently conduct themselves in an exemplary manner, serving as positive role models for the entire construction industry.

Stakeholder Manager’s Jade Wardle and Laura McKernan were awarded the certificate for their desire and dedication to take on board the scheme’s ethics and promote all that the scheme offers across all NGN’s mains replacement projects. They have also shared learning and best practice from site visits to influence change and improvements with not only other colleagues internally but also with other organisations.

Site Assurance Officer Chris Board was awarded the certificate for working tirelessly across NGN’s gas holder demolition projects over the last two years, ensuring the sites meet the highest levels of performance against the CCS code. One example of this was creating a scheme for the Redheugh gas holder site, whereby each letter of the words Redheugh gas site are attributed (please see notes to editors) to ensure best practice beyond statutory requirements.

Ian Whitehead, Major Projects Programme Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “Without the dedication of Jade, Laura, Chris, and everyone who has embraced CSS’s code of best practice, we wouldn’t be the community focussed, trailblazing, heartfelt and happy organisation we are today.

Glen Judge, Operations Manager at Northern Gas Networks, added: “The CCS hero scheme isn’t just about highlighting the great work that colleagues do, it’s about ensuring that construction sites are going above and beyond to make sure we respect the community, protect the environment, secure everyone’s safety and value our workforce.”

The criteria for a scheme hero is someone who diligently performs his or her duties day-in-day-out, but also goes the extra mile in any aspect of the scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice, adding extra value to their organisation and the industry as a whole. As well as someone who has either made strong links with the community and become an approachable and friendly face, or someone who has implemented an innovative practice on projects, potentially reducing accidents or injuries.

CCS is a non-profit-making, independent organisation founded in 1997 by the construction industry to improve its image. Construction sites, companies and suppliers voluntarily register with the scheme and agree to abide by the Code of Considerate Practice, designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements.

Northern Gas Networks shares helpful advice about who to call if you’re experiencing issues with your gas boiler

Read

Due to the severe weather across parts of our region, the North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is advising customers of the correct numbers to call should they have an issue with their gas supply, boiler or appliances.

The advice is being issued to help customers to get back on gas as quickly as possible and stay safe and warm.

If you smell gas, have a gas leak or suspect carbon monoxide please call the National Gas Emergency number immediately on 0800 111 999.

If you have an issue with your gas boiler or any other gas appliance, please call a Gas Safe registered engineer or contact your gas supplier. To find a Gas Safe registered engineer in your area call 0800 408 5500 or visit: www.gassaferegister.co.uk/find-an-engineer

If you have home care cover with your gas supplier please contact them directly.

Cold weather often causes gas pipes to freeze. If your boiler condensate pipes have frozen you should:

  • Hold a hot water bottle, or heat wrap, around the pipe
  • Alternatively, pour hot, NOT boiling, water over the frozen end of the pipe
  • If the boiler fires up, it’s fixed. If it doesn’t then pour hot water on the pipe again. If your pipes are still frozen, please call your supplier

Ian Waddle, Head of Customer Operations at Northern Gas Networks, said: “Our engineers have been working around the clock to keep customers safe and warm at this bitterly cold time. However, contacting the right number is really important, so that issues can be dealt with by the right team as quickly as possible.

“If customers smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide (CO) or have a gas leak they need to call the National Gas Emergency number immediately – 0800 111 999. If you experience an issue with your boiler, internal pipework or gas appliances, you must contact your gas supplier or a Gas Safe registered engineer as our engineers are not qualified to carry out this work. Their priority is to make the situation safe in the event of a gas emergency.”

If you smell gas, have a gas leak, or suspect carbon monoxide please call 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
