£1million upgrade to Huddersfield gas distribution network

Read

The north of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing more than £1million, to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around Lockwood, Huddersfield.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing more than 3,500 m of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones. This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

Beginning on Monday (26 February), the project will take approximately 35-weeks and is scheduled for completion at the end of September. It has been planned in conjunction with Kirklees Council to ensure the works are completed as quickly and safely as possible.

To help keep any inconvenience to a minimum, the work has been planned in three phases, detailed below (please note, these are proposed dates and are subject to change).

Phase 1 will be split into three sections beginning on Monday (26 February), the first section will involve replacing the existing gas pipe between 97 Woodhead Road and The Lockwood public house. During this time there will be two-way and three-way lights until Monday 23 April.

The second section, beginning on Monday 7 May for approximately three-weeks, will take place at the junction of Woodhead Road and Lockwood Scar. During this time there will be no left-turn from Lockwood Scar on to Woodhead Road. A signed diversion will be in place.

Section three will take place on Lockwood Scar, between Woodhead Road and Meltham Road, from Monday 21 May for approximately nine-weeks. During this time four-way lights will be in place as well as a contraflow system.

Phase 2 will take place on Albert Street, between Fair street and Bath Street from Monday 12 March for approximately four-weeks. Once this section is complete work will continue Albert Street, toward Bridge Street, for a further 18-weeks. During this time parking restrictions will be in place.

As part of Phase 3, work will continue southbound on Woodhead Road, between 97 Woodhead Road and the junction of Station Lane, from Monday 18 June until Friday 28 September. During this time two-way lights will be in place.

During each phase diversion routes will be clearly signposted but due to the nature of the works road users should prepare for some delays to their journeys. Anyone who would like to find out more about the project can do so by visiting the Lockwood website page.

Chris Nevison, Business Operational Leader at Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have been working closely with Kirklees Council to carefully plan these works in order to minimise any disruption to customers.

Update – £2.5m upgrade to Huddersfield gas distribution network

Read

Work has continued this month (January) on Leeds Road, Huddersfield as part of the £2.5m upgrade to the ageing gas distribution network in and around the area.

Work is progressing well and from Sunday (21 January) three-way temporary lights will be introduced at the junction of Old Fieldhouse Lane for approximately six-weeks. During this time the central island will be removed to allow for two-way traffic.

From Saturday 17 February works will also take place at the junction of Vine Street for approximately one-week. Access to Vine Street will be maintained but exiting traffic will be required to divert via Fieldhouse Road and Canal Street. In order to complete this section of work safely a lane suspension will be in place on this section of Leeds Road.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing almost 3km of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones. This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The ageing pipes, some of which are nearly 100 years old, have required a number of repairs in recent years. Therefore, NGN has prioritised them for replacement this year to minimise any future inconvenience for residents and road users.

Chris Nevison, Business Operational Leader at Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works. But by replacing these aging metal pipes with more durable plastic pipes we will be able to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas for at least another 100 years.”
