Botcherby Community Centre benefits from grass roots grants programme

Read

A Carlisle-based community centre was among the beneficiaries of the Community Partnering Fund, a grant scheme delivered in partnership by Northern Gas Networks (NGN), Northern Powergrid and Leeds Community Foundation which allows grass roots organisations to bid for funding, which will help deliver benefits to their local communities.

Botcherby Community Centre, a former school that helps to educate and advise adults on the issues that affect their local neighbourhood, received funding to introduce educational workshops and training in Carlisle.

The funding benefited 46 residents through the introduction of a Level 2 Debt Awareness course, delivered by National Energy Action, and a Dementia Friends awareness session, delivered by trained colleagues from Northern Gas Networks. Funding also supported the centre to create a short film on the importance of recognising the signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide.

The Community Partnering Fund is awarded to grassroots projects and third-sector organisations across the North of England that demonstrate an innovative approach to sustainability, encourage interest in STEM subjects and career opportunities, assist with hardship associated with fuel poverty, and those that promote knowledge of energy efficiency and home safety.

Following funding, Botcherby Community Centre has collaborated with four other community centres, a resident’s association, the local CVS, Riverside Housing and members of a learning disability group, helping to bring partners together surrounding common interests in their community. The centre provides a platform and safe place for people in need to acquire new skills and ways of thinking, covering topics of energy safety, money management issues and carbon monoxide.

Helen Fisher, Manager at Botcherby Community Centre comments on the success of the project:

“The funding we received from the Community Partnering Fund has been incredible and has had an immense impact on the local Carlisle community. The awareness sessions have been paramount in promoting energy safety and saving.

“There is no doubt that all those involved in the training sessions have learned something new and have been encouraged to make a difference in their own home, as well as passing on information about fuel poverty, energy saving and safety to their family and friends. We received excellent feedback from attendees, with many choosing to check energy comparison sites at home, resulting in home energy savings of over £400 in some cases.

“The Community Partnering Fund has allowed us to start working on a number of new opportunities, including a project with adults with learning disabilities to guide them on scripting, performing and producing a film about the dangers of carbon monoxide when camping.

“One volunteer with a community association in Carlisle has been a keen participant in the project, having attended and received a Level 2 accreditation in fuel debt advice, as well as becoming a willing Dementia Friend. She is now an advocate and provides advice and support for those struggling to pay their energy bills and shares safety advice with residents.

“It has been incredible to have support from companies like Northern Gas Networks and National Energy Action, who are well-known in the community and are passionate about providing support to communities such as ours. We have reached over 100 people since receiving the funding, with plenty of ideas in the pipeline – it is an extremely exciting time for Botcherby Community Centre.”

The latest round of funding available through the Community Partnering Fund is now open to applications, and charities and community projects such as Botcherby Community Centre are invited to come forward before midday on 15th October.

Applicants have the potential to receive a share of a grant distribution worth more than £100,000 across two phases. The first phase will award grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 from a £50,000 fund pot, with £50,000 previously awarded in the Spring).

Helen provides the following advice to those considering entering for the first time:

“The Community Partnering Fund provides fantastic opportunities for local groups. A good project is all about partnering with organisations that can provide expert advice and support to deliver more for communities and expand reach.

“To make the most of a fund like this it’s extremely important that you ask questions, through doing so we were able to involve the teams at Northern Gas Networks and National Energy Action into our projects, which elevated our results and helped to make a real difference to the lives of residents.

“Communities have a responsibility to ensure those residents that require additional support are made aware of any issues affecting their local area, particularly when it comes to safety.  It’s not just about the funding, make sure you take advantage of the opportunity for ongoing expert guidance and support.”

Essential upgrade to gas distribution network in Papcastle, Cockermouth

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is carrying out essential works to upgrade the gas distribution network in the Papcastle area of Cockermouth. This work will affect the areas around The Mount, Papcastle Road and Gote Road.

The £350,000 project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing around 2.5km of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic equivalents. This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project will last for approximately 20 weeks in total and is due to start on Monday 7 October 2019. It has been carefully planned in conjunction with Cumbria County Council. NGN engineers will be working hard to complete the work as quickly as possible and will provide regular updates throughout the project.

In order to carry out the works safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to introduce some traffic management measures. The work has been planned to be carried out in phases, to minimise the disruption caused. These are as follows:

• A road closure from the Belle Vue pub on Drovers Lane up to Castle Gardens near The Mount, starting on Monday 7 October. The closure will be in place for approximately three weeks;
• When this first phase of work on Drovers Lane is complete, a one-way only system will be introduced on The Mount. NGN expects this phase to be in place for approximately six weeks, and;

• On Papcastle Road between Derwent Mews and the Old Pump House two-way traffic lights will be in place for approximately another five weeks.

Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journeys as travel times may be affected, and to use alternative routes if at all possible.

Richie Manuel, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have been working closely with Cumbria County Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience customers may encounter and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”

Community projects throughout North of England set to benefit from £100,000 fund

Read

Siobhan Barton, Head of Stakeholder Relations, Jill Walker, Social Strategy Project Manager, Northern Gas Networks, Kate Hainsworth, CEO, Leeds Community Foundation

  • The Community Partnering Fund is now open to applications
  • Fund recognises and supports grass roots projects with economic, educational and social value
  • Brought forward by Northern Gas Networks, Northern Powergrid and Leeds Community Foundation.

Local community groups that demonstrate an innovative approach to sustainability are invited to come forward with the potential to receive a share of a grant distribution worth more than £100,000.
Northern Gas Networks (NGN), Northern Powergrid and Leeds Community Foundation have opened the annual, award-winning Community Partnering Fund for entries, with a bigger fund pot available than ever before.

The first phase will award grants of between £1,000 and £10,000 from a £50,000 fund pot, which will be distributed to grassroots projects and third-sector organisations, enabling the three fund partners to broaden their support for local communities in the process.
This year’s total fund will be the biggest yet, as Northern Gas Networks has also pledged to give back a further £2,000 to a deserving initiative following a fundraising drive that recognised and rewarded customer participation in a survey to help shape its future business plan, for 2021 – 2026, earlier this year.

Pioneering and sustainable programmes throughout the North of England, including projects that assist with the hardship associated with fuel poverty, those that promote knowledge of energy efficiency and initiatives that inform the public about home safety, are eligible to apply for the funding. Likewise, projects that encourage interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and associated career opportunities, or groups that promote the free Priority Services Register, which supports energy customers in vulnerable situations, will also be considered for the grants and training on offer through the scheme.

The second phase of the programme, scheduled for early next year, will award an additional £50,000 to worthwhile projects.

Previous ventures helped under the scheme include Community Voice FM (CVFM Radio), which used its grant to reach up to 8,000 local people. The station conducted computer classes for ethnic minority groups, which included the opportunity to learn about energy consumption and participate in a live radio show to encourage listeners to compare their energy prices online. To further engage the community, a work club was also set up that supported residents to find employment. After shadowing radio presenters and conducting research on carbon monoxide poisoning, those attending the group created a jingle to educate local people about the dangers of CO and how they can be easily identified and avoided.

Tom Bell, Head of Social Strategy at Northern Gas Networks, the gas distributer for the North of England, said: “The Community Partnering Fund is open and ready to support many of the incredible projects taking place in our communities. This is a fantastic opportunity to boost the great work being delivered by inspiring individuals and teams. As a business based in the heart of communities, we are committed to giving back to the areas that we work in and that our team call home, and we wish everyone entering this year the very best of luck.”

Michelle Cummings, Social Responsibility Manager at Northern Powergrid, the company responsible for electricity distribution network that powers the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, commented: “It’s incredibly rewarding to see first-hand how the fund can make a difference and how, as a fund partner, we can support the communities we serve beyond keeping their lights on. We’d encourage any groups with outreach activities that develop, strengthen, and educate their local communities about STEM subjects, saving energy and the support available through our free Priority Services Register, to apply for a grant.”

Kate Hainsworth, Chief Executive at Leeds Community Foundation, added: “Here at the Leeds Community Foundation, we’re proud to have been in partnership with Northern Gas Networks since the start of the funding scheme. Over the years we’ve seen the programme develop including joining forces with Northern Powergrid in 2018/19 and doubling the fund pot to £100,000, with awards of £50,000 now made every six months. We are excited to welcome applications from a range of exciting projects across the region.”

Idrees Rashid, Director of CVFM, said: “We are so thankful to have previously received a grant. The money enabled us to deliver some innovative and engaging activities, providing us the opportunity to support our local community and make a real difference to the lives of our listeners in the Tees Valley area.”

Applications for the annual Community Partnering Fund programme will be accepted from 4 September until 15 October 2019. For more information, search for #CommunityPartneringFund on social media or visit www.leedscf.org.uk/community-partnering-fund to apply for a grant.
