NGN’s work to streamline traffic management planning shortlisted for national award

Read

Northern Gas Networks, the North of England’s gas distributor, has been recognised for its innovative work to improve the impact of traffic management on customers when improvements to the network are taking place.

Traffic management, such as temporary traffic lights or lane closures can be necessary when, for example, gas pipes are being replaced. In traffic sensitive areas, a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) is always required before work can start; agreed with the local authority and other stakeholders. However, these plans can be complicated and slow to produce.

Now, the Innovation Team at Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is developing new ways to plan traffic management so that it will have less of an impact on people’s lives. And it’s this work that has seen NGN shortlisted for a national award by the UK Society for Trenchless Technology (UKSTT); a charity which promotes new technologies and practices which don’t involve digging.

New software developed by NGN and project partner 1 Spatial now makes it possible to generate automated traffic plans far more quickly, with clear benefits for road users, local businesses and other customers.

And it’s this responsive approach which has seen the project shortlisted in the UKSTT awards’ category for the Application of Digital Technology.

NGN’s Head of Innovation, Richard Hynes-Cooper, said: “This shortlisting recognises the ability for our designers, planners and engineers to generate traffic management plans, at the click of a button. This is a potential game-changer for the industry.

“It will save money on every traffic management scheme that we create, as well as ensuring that our key local stakeholders, such as councils, have quick and easy access to our plans.

“However, what is most exciting about this innovation for me is the ability to make our schemes even more customer-focused. Bu building in key information such as local traffic flows, we can design schemes which are less disruptive, and more sensitive to local issues.”

The category winners will be announced at the UKSTT’s Annual Awards 2019 ceremony on 17th September.

Northern Gas Networks has around 1,700km of large diameter gas mains, stretching across Cumbria, Yorkshire and the North East – all of which require regular upkeep and assessment.

Across the network, NGN is investing in the replacement of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones which will last much longer.

Working to develop new approaches, whether they are automated traffic plans or robotic engineers which can go down into gas pipes to carry out repairs, is a key part of NGN’s role as industry leaders and innovators: enabling us to provide the best possible service to customers.

Essential gas mains upgrade on Queens Road, Hull

Read

The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing in the upgrade of the ageing gas distribution network around Queens Road, Hull.

The project, which started on 20th May 2019, is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and involves replacing over 500 metres of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.

All work has been planned in conjunction with Hull City Council and is being carried out during the school summer holidays to minimise traffic disruption.

In order to complete the next part of the work safely and efficiently, it has been necessary to introduce some temporary traffic management.

Three-way traffic lights are in place at the mini roundabout at the junction between Queens Road, Princes Avenue and Princes Road. These will be in position until Sunday 1st September, and will be removed in time for the return to school on Monday 2nd September.

It’s expected that motorists will encounter some delays while the traffic management measures are in place, so are advised to find an alternative route for the next two weeks or leave extra time for journeys.

Gerry Hart, Site Manager for NGN, said: “We would like to thank all our customers and commuters for their patience while we carry out this essential work to modernise the gas network in Hull. We are very sorry for the inconvenience the work is causing and we’re doing every we can to complete the project as soon as possible.”

Upgrade to gas distribution network on Montgomery Way and Geltsdale Avenue and surrounding streets, Carlisle

Read

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the North of England’s gas distributer, has been working with Cumbria County Council to carefully plan work to upgrade the gas infrastructure in the Geltsdale Avenue and Montgomery Way areas of Carlisle.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing more than 2.5 km of existing metal gas pipes with more durable alternatives. This will ensure that customers in the area can continue to heat their homes and businesses for many winters to come.

Following discussions with Cumbria County Council and other infrastructure providers working in the area, NGN’s essential work will begin on Geltsdale Avenue and surrounding side streets on Tuesday 27 August. Work on a small stretch of Warwick Road, and on Montgomery Way, is scheduled to take place only after ongoing work to upgrade water infrastructure in the area is complete.

Richie Manuel, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks said: “Northern Gas Networks recognises that Warwick Road is a busy road in and out of Carlisle so we have worked closely with Cumbria County Council and other utility providers to schedule work to ensure that we minimise disruption caused.

“We will be able to share further details once a start date for the work on Warwick Road and Montgomery Way is agreed with Cumbria County Council. In the meantime, we would like to thank everyone for bearing with us while we complete this essential work.”

Northern Gas Networks has been door knocking homes and businesses to make them aware of the work and will share updates on its website – northerngasnetworks.co.uk, Twitter @NGNgas and Facebook/northerngasnetworks as work progresses.

Essential upgrade to gas distribution network on Windebrowe Avenue, Keswick and surrounding streets

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is carrying out essential works to upgrade the gas distribution network in and around Windebrowe Avenue, Keswick.

The project, which is expected to begin on Monday 23 September with a duration of around 18 weeks, is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones. This will ensure that customers in the area continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply and can heat their homes for many years to come.

The works have been carefully planned in conjunction with Cumbria County Council and NGN has made every effort to minimise the impact of the essential works on road users and members of the public.

While still in the planning stages, it can be confirmed that the project will not impact the flood defence work that is being carried out in the town or the diversion routes that are in place while flood defence improvements are underway. Furthermore, it will not be necessary to close any roads to traffic while the gas mains upgrade is taking place.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently it may be necessary to install temporary three-way traffic lights at the junction of Trinity Way and Windebrowe Avenue (near to St Herbert’s C of E School) for one week from Monday 22 October.

NGN has planned this stage of the work to coincide with the school half term holidays, so that in the event that temporary traffic lights are required, the impact on road users, the school and parents is kept to a minimum.

It may also be necessary to temporary suspend parking bays on one side of Windebrowe Avenue for two weeks in October / November and NGN will be talking to local residents to keep them informed as plans progress. Access for residents will be maintained at all times.

Stevie Sharp-Brown, Community Care Officer for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Cumbria County Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“I’d like to thank everyone for bearing with us while we complete these essential works.”

NGN will be door knocking customers affected by the work and is holding a community drop in event on Monday 9 September from 5pm – 7pm at the Twa Dogs Inn Pub on Penrith Road where the team will be available to share more information about the work.

Essential upgrade to gas distribution network on Great North Road in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is carrying out essential works to upgrade the gas distribution network in and around Great North Road, Gosforth.

The project represents around £90k and is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area. It involves replacing more than 300 metres of existing metal gas pipes with more durable plastic ones. This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The works have been carefully planned in conjunction with Newcastle City Council, having been planned to take place during the school summer holidays when traffic is lighter than usual. The project is expected to take about five weeks to complete.

In order to protect NGN engineers and members of the public, it has been necessary to introduce some temporary traffic management measures in and around Great North Road, southbound between Broadway roundabout and ASDA Gosforth. This involves a lane closure so that engineers can reach the gas main.

It’s expected the lane closure will be removed before schools start back in September. In the meantime, motorists and commuters are advised to leave extra time for travel because of the traffic management in place, which is significantly affecting journey times.

Alan Robley, Site Manager for NGN, said: “We have been working closely with Newcastle City Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience that people may encounter and thank everyone for their support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”

NGN Customer Care officers have been door-knocking local residents and businesses to make customers aware of the project’s latest phase, while on-site signage will advise road users of the work taking place. Regular updates will also be available on our website, northerngasnetworks.co.uk, on Twitter @NGNgas and on Facebook @northerngasnetworks.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual while the works are underway.

Upgrade to gas distribution network at Newcastle Road, Chester-le-Street

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), will begin essential gas mains replacement work on Newcastle Road, Chester-le-Street today (Monday 5 August) for approximately one week.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and involves replacing existing metal gas pipes with more durable alternatives.  This will ensure that the community continues to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for generations to come.

NGN has prioritised the pipe for replacement to minimise any inconvenience caused by future repairs.

The upgrade has been carefully planned in conjunction with Durham County Council to minimise the inconvenience caused.

In order for works to be carried out safely and efficiently, a small section of the south-bound carriageway will be closed from the A693 roundabout at Blind Lane.  A signed diversion will be in place for road users.

Bus stops on the closed section of Newcastle Road will be temporarily suspended throughout the duration of the work and road users are advised to leave extra time for travel.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers are door-knocking residents to make customers aware of the work, while on-site signage will provide information about the work taking place. Upgrade to gas distribution network at Mill Street West, Dewsbury

Read

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £70k to upgrade the gas distribution network in the Mill Street West area of Dewsbury.

The project will begin on Monday, 19 August and is expected to last approximately five weeks, having been planned in close conjunction with Kirklees Council.

The scheme involves replacing 200 metres of ageing metallic gas main with new, more durable plastic pipes. This is to ensure the safe, continued and reliable supply of gas to customers in Dewsbury for years to come.

To protect our teams and members of the public during the work, it will be necessary to introduce the following traffic management.

A partial road closure will be introduced at Mill Street West from 19 August until 22 September.

Traffic will not be able to enter Mill Street West from Savile Road or by crossing from Mill Street East, however motorists will be able to exit Mill Street West as normal.
A full signed diversion will be in place during this time.

It’s expected that journey times will be increased because of the traffic management, so all motorists and commuters are advised to leave extra time for travel.

NGN’s Customer Care team will be on site throughout to provide updates to affected businesses and residents. Further updates will be provided throughout the scheme.

Updates will also be posted on Facebook/northerngasnetworks and @NGNgas as well as Kirklees Council’s channels.

Chris Nevison, NGN Business Operations Lead for Pennines, said:  “After safety, minimising the impact of road works on our customers is our top priority, and we have worked closely with Kirklees Council to plan these works.

“We understand how town centre works have a major impact on road users, and because of this we have utilised the school summer holidays to carry out the work, in order to minimise impact on traffic.

“We’d like to thank all our customers for their patience whilst we carry out this essential project, and apologise for any inconvenience the works may cause as we look to complete them as safely and quickly as possible.’’
