£95K upgrade to Sowerby Bridge gas distribution network

Read

The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £95,000 to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in Burnley Road, Sowerby Bridge.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and involves replacing 600m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which will commence on Monday 18 July and last approximately six weeks, has been planned in conjunction with Calderdale Council to ensure all works are completed with as little disruption as possible.

In order to complete the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to put traffic management measures in place during the project.

Two-way traffic signals will be placed on Burnley Road at the junction of Tuel Lane for the entire project. The lights will be manually operated between 7am – 7pm.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes in order to avoid extended journey times.

There will be a footpath closure in place outside number 2 Burnley Road and next to number 17 Burnley Road from Monday 15 August for approximately two weeks. Pedestrians are advised to plan their route in advance and if approaching Burnley Road, use the pedestrian islands to cross the road safely.

The bus stop at the top of Tuel Lane will be temporarily suspended and it’s expected there will be some delays to bus services which use Burnley Road.

NGN engineers will be working from Monday to Sunday between 8am and 5pm to complete the work as quickly as possible.

A public meeting will be held at The White Horse, Burnley Road, Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, HX6 2TH on Thursday 7 July between 5pm – 6.30pm for any customers with questions or concerns regarding the works.

Matt Cordingley, Site Manager at Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Calderdale Council to carefully plan these works during the school holidays in order to minimise disruption to customers.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused, and thank our customers for their patience and support while we carry out our work.”

NGN lends a hand at Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice

Read

The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) and specialist contractor, local engineering firm D&N Reilly are supporting Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice in Huddersfield with two special donations.
As well as transporting gas to Huddersfield, NGN transports gas to the north east of England, northern Cumbria and most of Yorkshire.

The distributer is currently carrying out a 22-week scheme to upgrade ageing metal gas mains in the Huddersfield area with modern plastic pipes, ensuring the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.

The essential works are taking place on Lightridge Road in nearby Fixby, and began in May.
The project is registered as a Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) site and is monitored on the measures put in place to be more considerate towards local neighbourhoods and the public, the workforce, and the environment.

As part of their CCS pledges, NGN’s team of Customer Care officers have visited local community groups and schools to participate in education and charity work. Officers Amy Waites and Natalie Beal visited Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice on Fell Greave Road and learned they could make a small difference in day-to-day resources.

Donation 1

After the pair raised £250 by running the hospice’s inaugural Colour Run last month, NGN has now donated around £400 towards specialist pressure mats for overnight stays.

Construction services colleagues D&N Reilly, the local contractor which carries out work on NGN’s behalf, have contributed around £600 towards days out for the children during school holidays where extra equipment or care is required.

The contractor has also committed to filling potholes on the road outside the hospice to help improve the surface.

Corporate Fundraiser for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice Sharon Ennis said: “On behalf of Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, we’d like to say a massive thanks for the help NGN and D&N Reilly have given us. It’s only with wonderful supporters like this that we are able to help create memories for the children and their families.’’

NGN’s Customer Care officer Amy Waites said: “Our customers are extremely important to us, so we were delighted to be able to help Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice in this way and support the fantastic work they do for families.”

Year 6 students from Hudson Road Primary School learn about the NGN Hendon depot from Customer Operations Area Manager John Richardson

Thirty Year 6 pupils from Hudson Road Primary School spent the afternoon learning about exactly what NGN does and how it does it, as part of their Career Inspiration studies.

Customer Operations Area Manager John Richardson welcomed the children and three teachers to Commercial Road, before a series of talks and activities designed to bring the gas distribution business to life were delivered.

Donning hi-vis vests and safety hats, pupils learned about the repair side of NGN, observing trace cables and how leaks are repaired on the pipe network.

A maths session on percentages came next, where the children were given plans for a gas mains replacement project and asked to work out costings.

A step back into history saw the youngsters tour the gas holders at Hendon, learning how the iconic structures were used to store gas in years gone by to cope with demand at peak times. A safety session on the dangers of Carbon Monoxide and gas escapes followed, with the pupils learning the 0800 111 999 number in case they ever smell gas.

Exploring their artistic sides, NGN’s local community artist Mick Hand delivered an art workshop where pupils were encouraged to create a large mural to hang at their school, before they explored the emergency side of NGN’s business, learning how to detect gas leaks using hand held devices known as Gascoseekers.

Teacher Hannah Jeynes said: “The children loved having hands-on experience and meeting people with a range of educational and working backgrounds. It’s given them food for thought to think about what they would like to do in the future, and how their learning in school has a contribution to this.”

John Richardson concluded: “It was great to see the children show such willingness to learn more about what we do at NGN.
“They showed a lot of enthusiasm for the different parts of the business and hopefully they’ve taken away some interesting facts about what a career in utilities might involve.”

Year 5 Denbigh Community Primary School students from Howdon visit the gas holders near their school to be given a tour of the site by project manager Mark Johnson and safety mascot Ivor Goodsite

Thirty Year 5 pupils from Denbigh Community Primary School spent the afternoon learning about safety and the importance of preventing accidents, as part of their Child Safety Week studies.

NGN Major Projects Team Lead Mark Johnson gave the children and two teachers a tour of the site, where two gas holder tanks are in the process of being safely dismantled over 32 weeks.

The children watched a short presentation on the history of gas holders, learning why the iconic structures are the shape they are, what they were used for, why they are now being taken down and how NGN and demolition partners O’Brien Group are carrying out this work. A question and answer session was then held to give the youngsters a chance to find out more about the project.

The £680,000 scheme is registered as a Considerate Constructor Scheme site, and as part of the Scheme’s pledges, NGN’s Customer Care team visit local schools and charities to explore ways of making a difference to the lives of people living where engineers are working.

Customer Care officers delivered a Play Safe, Stay Safe assembly at Denbigh Community Primary School earlier this year, and NGN artist in residence Mick Hand held an art workshop at the school where children were invited to commemorate the gas holders through the creation of a giant mural. The artwork is now displayed at the school and at the gas holder site.

Last Wednesday’s visit to see the gas holders was a chance for the children to observe the huge structures up close, and following the presentation the children took a supervised walk around one of the two holders, wearing PPE clothing and hard hats. They also got to meet Ivor Goodsite, the Considerate Constructor Scheme safety mascot.

Year 5 teacher at Denbigh Community Primary School Lynn Stephenson said: “The chance to collaborate with NGN has been a great way for the children to engage with a project within their local area and one that has an impact where they live. They greatly enjoyed learning about the history of the site and are eager for a repeat visit to see the project in its latter stages.”

NGN Major Projects Team Lead Mark Johnson said: “It was great to see the children show such enthusiasm and willingness to learn more about the site. You could see they were genuinely interested in how the holders worked and what they were used for.

“In the Q&A session their questions were very impressive and of a level beyond their years which showed they understood the mechanics of the holders. It was a real pleasure to spend the afternoon with them, so much so that we’ve invited them to come back at the point when they holders are part-dismantled.”

NGN is encouraging people to share their memories of the Howdon gas holders through its ‘Gas Holder Memories’ campaign by emailing gasholdermemories@northerngas.co.uk, using #gasholdermemories on Facebook and Twitter, or in writing to: Northern Gas Networks, 1st Floor, 1 Emperor Way, Doxford International Business Park, Sunderland, SR3 3XR.
