CO superheroes win regional safety award

Read

George McDonald, from Woodlea Primary School in County Durham, and Isabella Bradbury from Rockliffe First School in Whitely Bay, have been recognised as safety superheroes by Northern Gas Networks.

The pair were North of England winners in a national annual creative competition to raise awareness of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Their colourful safety posters highlight the dangers of CO, both in the home, and while outdoors, such as while camping.

They were congratulated in person by Northern Gas Networks’  Jill Walker and Alex Brightman, during a school assembly.

They also travelled to the Houses of Parliament to receive winners’ certificates alongside other regional winners from around the country.

Jill Walker, Northern Gas Networks’ Social Strategy Project Manager said: “Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas, which can be fatal when breathed in. It is known as the silent killer – and for good reason.

“Making children aware of the causes of CO, and the tell-tale signs and symptoms, from an early age, is really important to keep the next generation safe and sound.

“We were very impressed with George and Isabella’s entries, which were colourful and impactful, with a clear and persuasive message. They are very worthy winners for our region.”

Alex Brightman, a Community Care Officer for Northern Gas Networks, gave safety talks to participating schools about the dangers of CO.

She said: “It has been so rewarding making children across our region aware of the dangers of CO. This annual competition is an incredibly valuable way of making young people alert to CO, throughout their lives. The children’s entries have been fantastic.”

The national competition is run each year by the companies responsible for managing the gas distribution networks across Great Britain. It is open to children aged 5-11. Entries can be in any media, such as eye-catching posters, cartoons, videos, models, short stories or poems that are informative and accurate in warning of the dangers of CO poisoning.

All winners received trophies, as well as a monetary prize for themselves and for their school.

World’s first 100% hydrogen testing facility unveiled

Read

H21, the world’s largest project to reduce carbon emissions, has launched the first ever testing facility for 100% hydrogen.

The site, at the Health and Safety Executive’s Science and Research Centre in Buxton, will carry out controlled tests to establish the critical safety evidence proving that a 100% hydrogen gas network is equally as safe as the natural gas grid heating our homes and businesses today. The results will be critical in determining if it is safe to convert millions of homes across the country from natural gas to hydrogen.

H21, which is led by Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, in partnership with Cadent, SGN and Wales & West Utilities, HSE Science and Research Centre and DNV-GL, is part of a number of gas industry projects designed to support conversion of the UK gas networks to carry 100% hydrogen.

Currently, about 30% of UK carbon emissions are from the heating of homes, businesses and industry. H21 states that a large-scale conversion of the gas grid from natural gas to hydrogen is vital to meeting the Government’s Net Zero targets.

Repurposing the gas network to carry 100% hydrogen would represent a huge step towards meeting decarbonisation targets and put the UK in a leading position in hydrogen conversion, with the potential to create and sustain thousands of high-quality jobs.  It would support innovation and implementation of other hydrogen technology such as cars, trains, lorries and buses, and enable UK industry to export its skills and services across the world.

The Buxton testing facilities have been built following the H21 North of England report which sets out detailed plans on how hydrogen could be used to deliver clean energy to nearly 4 million homes and 40,000 businesses and industries in the North of England by 2034. Recently, Chris Stark, Chief Executive of the influential Committee on Climate Change described finding a low carbon solution to heating the UK’s 23 million homes as “the biggest challenge the UK faces”.

The results of the testing facility will be eagerly assessed by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy who are due to publish a ‘Low carbon gas’ consultation later this year.

Mark Horsley, Chief Executive of Northern Gas Networks said:

“I’m proud that H21 is launching the world’s first 100% hydrogen testing facility.

“The potential for this low carbon gas to make inroads into decarbonisation is immense and the work that Northern Gas Networks and its partners is doing here is critical in understanding how we can make a zero-carbon, hydrogen-based gas grid a reality. This will not only enable us to meet decarbonisation targets, but it will improve air quality in towns and cities, create thousands of good jobs and place the UK as a global-leader in hydrogen technology.

“We look forward to sharing our results with the Government, the sector and other industries so that we can work collaboratively to achieve a clean, hydrogen economy as soon as possible and deliver on the promise of low carbon energy for our communities.”

Ed Syson, Chief Safety and Strategy Officer at Cadent said:

“Cadent recognises the importance of working in partnership across the gas industry and with innovative companies on a variety of hydrogen projects, from blended hydrogen projects such as HyNet and Hydeploy, to the H21 100% hydrogen project, which will enable us all to work towards a common end, to lower carbon emissions and decarbonise the gas grids.

“Repurposing the UK’s gas network to carry blended gas, a mixture of methane and hydrogen or 100% hydrogen has huge potential to address decarbonisation in a sustainable and affordable way – and in particular, the intractable areas around domestic heat, industry and heavy transport. The launch of the H21 test facility today, is another important step on the path to securing the delivery of low and zero-carbon energy and is essential if the UK is to meet its stringent climate change targets.”

Andrew Curran, HSE’s Chief Scientific Adviser said:

“We are pleased to be part of the H21 programme, and in particular, that we are housing this new specialist facility here in Buxton. We are sure this will become a key component in providing the evidence which will enable hydrogen to become a safe, clean and resilient component of our approach to achieving zero-emissions by 2050.”

Jonathan Brearley, Ofgem’s Executive Director Systems and Networks said:

“To hit the target of net zero carbon by 2050 it is critical that we transition to low carbon forms of heating. Hydrogen is a key contender to support this transition, and could also be used as a clean fuel for transport.

“I am delighted to open this H21 hydrogen testing facility for which Ofgem awarded £9 million to Northern Gas Networks through our Network Innovation Competition. Ofgem supports innovation that seeks to achieve decarbonisation of heating safely, at the lowest cost and least disruption to consumers.”

Anna Turley MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Hydrogen said:

“It is great to see world-leading hydrogen conversion projects taking place in the UK. As a country, we can be leaders in a large-scale shift to using hydrogen for heating our homes, fuelling transport and powering heavy industry.

“H21 is a hugely important project helping to achieve this and I congratulate all the organisations involved in successfully creating the first ever 100% hydrogen test facility. I look forward to seeing the results and working with H21 to share these across Parliament and with the Government”.

Tunes not fumes: festival goers urged to avoid ‘the silent killer’ this summer

Read

Festival goers and campers are being urged not to use portable gas stoves or BBQs inside tents this summer – because of the carbon monoxide (CO) risk they pose.

The warning comes from Northern Gas Networks, the region’s gas distributor.

Using stoves and BBQs inside, or close to, a tent can result in a build-up of CO in the confined space – with the potential to cause fatal poisoning.

Dubbed ‘the silent killer’, CO claims around 60 lives in England and Wales each year.

Tom Bell, Northern Gas Networks’ Head of Social Strategy said: “Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas, which can be fatal when breathed in.

“Many people don’t realise that bringing a BBQ inside the tent, or using a stove to warm things up when it’s cold, could result in fatal poisoning.

“By keeping portable cooking and heating devices well away from your tent, you can enjoy a fantastic, safe summer.”

Northern Gas Networks owns and maintains the North of England’s underground gas pipes, as well as providing the region’s emergency response service, if customers smell gas. All the company’s emergency engineers carry portable devices which can detect CO.

The company will be delivering a social media advertising campaign around the dangers of CO this summer.

The ‘silent killer’: facts

  • Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that has no smell or taste. Breathing it in can make you unwell, and it can kill if you’re exposed to high levels.
  • Every year there are around 60 deaths from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in England and Wales.
  • After carbon monoxide is breathed in, it enters your bloodstream and mixes with haemoglobin (the part of red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body) to form carboxyhaemoglobin. When this happens, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen, and this lack of oxygen causes the body’s cells and tissue to fail and die.
